Length of time to receive quotes from contractors

Is it just me, or do most contractors take forever to send a quote on a project? We're working on our 3rd project in our house in the past few months, and had 3 different contractors come by last week. All came highly recommended with multiple glowing reviews, but we've yet to receive a quote from any of them. We had this issue with our two other projects as well (painting and re-tiling the bathroom floors), where I had to follow up with several people to remind them to send a quote.

What's considered a reasonable amount of time to receive a quote?

You are not imagining it. We got quotes from four painting contractors to do our entire house--a big job. One never got back to me and I had to pester two more. We finally went with the one who was responsive. If nothing else it gave us a level of assurance that they would show up and finish on time. They did.

Here's another perspective.

Some of these reputable contractors, have partnerships with builders/flippers that one off customers are in the queue.
It sucks but for painting contractors they should be able to give you a quote on the spot or 2-3 business days at the most.
