| We are thinking of switching and these are the top options. Does anyone have any advice on how to determine which one is best for our family? We will not be applying for a mortgage or big loan anytime soon. Things that are important to us: no checking fees, no/low ATM fees, good online banking system (with automatic bill pay) and a brick and mortar option would be nice. Thanks! |
| Can't speak to Navy Fed, but we have been with USAA for two decades and they have fantastic customer service. No brick-and-mortar unless you are near their TX headquarters, though. |
|
We've always had both. Our checking is through NavyFCU, and they were our mortgagor when we had a mortgage.
USAA is our insurer, and there's a residual checking account there that maybe has $5. Both are good. NavyFed has the brick and mortar, and you can also use 7-Eleven ATMs for free. USAA reimburses the fees from any ATM. |
| I have been a NAVY Fed member for many years (about 25). Their service is excellent. They offer no Fee banking and deposits via phone, I have had my car notes and mortgages through them. I have always had top notch customer service. Consistently. |
This is us too. 28 years with Navy Fed. |
| USAA actually has a brick and mortar location in NOVA now. |
| I love USAS and have banked there for ages. Customer service is exemplary. |
| Love USAA. Amazing. |
|
USAA's customer service is unrivaled. They are great. But I don't get the best loan rates from them so have had to get my car loans elsewhere, which kinda sucks. I still maintain checking and savings accounts there, and got a personal loan there because despite the higher rate I knew it would be less hassle than going somewhere else. I certainly wasn't giving BoA another penny.
They have 2 brick-and-mortar locations in DC area/NoVA: Pentagon City and Tysons, by Chef Geoff's. |

USAA is our primary. Solid customer service and banking options.
Better rates for mortgages from other places. They make it really easy to do transactions like car loans. |
| You can't go wrong with either of them. Navy Federal does have more brick and mortar locations in this area. I know lots of people who have accounts at both. |
| I prefer USAA. I had a terrible experience with getting a Navy Fed mortgage and felt the customer service and follow up wasn't good. USAA on the other hand has always given me great customer service. |
| When other banks/insurers try and get me to switch, I just say I have USAA and it shuts them down. They are amazing. |
| Navy federal has several branches and some freestanding ATMs around nova. I use navy federal for checking/savings/CDs/car loan, USAA for insurance. Navy federal has always been very helpful. |
There is a USAA finance center in Arling and Tysons https://www.usaa.com/inet/pages/usaa_financial_center?akredirect=true Most CVS have USAA ATMs and you can deposit via UPS stores or mobile phone. |
