Should I let DC go to Mexico for spring break?

Anonymous
My 19 yo wants to go to Rocky Point in Puerto Penasco. I have never heard of it but I have read the state department's warnings for Sonora, the state that it's in. Scares me that it warns about driving only in the daytime and the high drug activity. He and a bunch of friends plan to go together to stay at a hotel but I know they will venture out. I know I cannot actually [/i]tell him what to do, but I have his passport and he needs me to mail it to him. I would never forgive myself if something happened to him. WWYD?

Are you paying a dime of this? Did you help in any way re: the arrangements or lodging?

Who is paying?

If my 19 year old was still living in my house or I was supporting him in college, I sure the hell wouldn't allow him in Mexico. Don't listen to the people that tell you "Oh, I've been there and we never have trouble". Complete idiots.

Why would you go to a country that has cops that are all corrupt? Do you not watch the news? Yes, I know he's 19 but your still the parent and are expected to give the proper advice.

This wouldn't even be up for discussion in my house. You know the right answer. He's still a kid.

Eh, for people in Arizona going to Rocky Point is like going to Ocean City. Not a big deal.

My family in Europe feels exactly the same way about visiting the U.S. "Don't you know the cops are corrupt and randomly kill children?!"

Your 19 year old will be fine. Tell him to stay away from buying drugs.

You make stupid look good.

Let him go. Don't buy drugs. That's a really bad idea.

Um, if your family is Black, then they are pretty much right to be worried!

There are spring break trips that are a little more structured thru student city. Yes, they have horrible names like a booze cruise to appeal to the age group- but it's in a contained area. About $1000 all inclusive for 5 days. Bahamas.

My college kid went to Mexico last spring break and is going again this year. They didn't leave the all-inclusive luxury resort last year. We are a bit worried about zika this year but DC is bringing bug spray.

No way.

To all you people saying "No".

This guy is 19. If a kid at the age of 19 is capable of completing him or herself in a foreign country, keeping him or herself out of trouble and safe, then there is one, and only on, conclusion. You failed miserably as parents.

Op here- to answer some of the questions.. No I am not "directly"paying for the trip. He saved up from his college allowance that we give him. We are paying for everything still at this point. I am not worried about his decisions. I worry about them encountering a corrupt cop or cartel members having a shoot out or a kidnapping.

Does the State department list these concerns for Sonora?

If you don't send him his passport in time, what will it do to your relationship?
