Mouthguard for 8 yo with missing teeth

Anonymous
Please help this clueless mom. My son needs a mouth guard and has a lot of missing teeth or ones half in or about to fall out. Do I buy a bunch and keep switching them as teeth come in? Don't you boil and fit them?

Yes you boil them to soften and set them. Unless your child's teeth appear overnight, you shouldn't have to buy a ton of mouth guards. If you see a tooth coming in, when it gets long enough to be able to but down and mold I to the mouth guard, so a new one. My 8 yo is missing a bunch of teeth and we did a new mouth guard a month ago for hockey and haven't had to do a new one yet.

Sorry for the typos

Shock Doc makes a youth boil and bite that's pretty good. If he's got a bunch of loose teeth, molding the guard is not going to be fun. A temporary cheapie that you don't mold might be a good solution.

Can you reboil and refit as needed?

Why risk it? Just buy a new one so you know it's protective.

I also thought they could be re-boiled if necessary but the youth ones should be cheap enough that you can replace it as needed.

I bought a Wilson Youth-size mouthguard for my 11-year-old and he found it comfortable enough that I didn't need to boil it at all. He wears braces and it fit comfortably over his braces and stays in place.

Just buy a bunch. He's going to lose them, share them with friends (yuck!), and wear them out. We tend to have three per kid on rotation. The one they're currently using. Their backup, for when they lose or destroy their current. And the one I carry on me because inevitably someone will desperately need one and yes they did check their bag and yes both of their mouthguards were there and no they have no idea how it is they have no mouthguards now! Also, you don't actually have to boil them. The ones I carry on me are new in package. If a kid needs an emergency one, it works fine. If they run out of their current or backup, we boil and fit at home, and I get a new, new in package mouthguard to carry around.
