Constipation?? Possible food sensitivity?

Anonymous
My 51 year old husband has been dealing with on and off constipation for some time now. He says he sometimes feels "full" after eating also. He saw the gastro doctor last summer and was put on Benefiber which helped until recently. He also HAS had a colonoscopy and all was clear there! He also had an abdominal ultra sound and liver and pancreas are all fine too.

He has another appointment this week which is good. I feel like maybe he has a food sensitivity like gluten, wheat, lactose? He does eat yogurt and bagels everyday but he insists it can't be that - he isn't a huge believer in the non-gluten thing.

I had always thought a food issue would cause diarrhea, not constipation and fullness? Anyone out there have similar symptoms? Also, any suggestions for good questions to ask the doctor in hopes he can find the cause??

Thanks.

He should just get the blood test for celiac disease just to rule it out. Celiac disease doesn't only present itself with diarreah - constipation can be a symptom as well. This happened to my sister who struggled with constipation to find out she tested positive for celiac disease.

You can have a food sensitivity, but not celiac. The Benefiber can help, but you still need lots of water yo move things thru the system. As for bloating, try a probiotic.

How much water does he drink? The amount of water people should rink on a daily basis (in ounces) is typically their weight in pounds / 2. So if he weighs 200 pounds, that's 100 ounces. Yes, it's a lot, but if he is constipated and only drinking like 50 ounces, he needs more water intake.

Lay off the "binding" type foods (bananas, rice, yogurt -- all great for helping with diarrhea).

Some people are intolerant of short-chain sugars. They change the osmotic pressure in the gut and can cause diarrhea or constipation or both.

He could try the FODMAP diet and see if it helps.

Proper diet is the best long term way to deal with constipation but in the short term something more immediate is needed. We all know that an enema can help but that's not very convenient or practical (to say nothing about uncomfortable) to use often and definitely not for mild, frequent constipation. A way to use water for quick relief is with a Hand Bidet Sprayer. Used primarily for improved hygiene it can also be used to shoot a blast of water up your pipes to loosen things up and get them moving. Fast, convenient, and comfortable. See bathroomsprayers.com.

Probiotics. Each is different.

DS's constipation was caused by gluten sensitivity.
