Are these out of style? My style leans modern, but I have a traditional large home, 6000 sq feet built in the 1990s.
We have leather sofas, dark brown in the living room. 2 story entry way, then hall way that leads to living room. The back of the sofa is basically what you can see from the front door. Would a sofa table look good to break up the back of the sofa. Are they out of style? What to put on it? |
| I personally like them, but they could be outdated since many people may remember them from "Who's The Boss?" and other 80's sitcoms. |
| I think it can still look modern if you pick the right style. Don't get one that screams country or anything close to it. You might want metal and glass or something like that. I think the other key to having it look contemporary is to keep it fairly empty. Don't add a lot of tiny knickknacks. Just put on a couple of attractive pieces of pottery or a sculpture, off to one side, and leave the rest empty. |

They're not outdated at all and many decorators are still using them. I think a sofa table in white would help break up your brown leather sofas (which are sort of out of style)
I don't have one just because my family room is rectangular and it would make the room too narrow to have a table behind the sofa. |
| my parents have it, and it looks great. On the large table are the remote control box for tv, phone, many framed photos, the electronic revolving framed photo display, a few mini statues from their travels abroad. |
| Our couch also backs onto an open hallway (very open floor plan). We put an Ikea Expedit 4x2 unit behind the couch and put boxes in the cubbies to make drawers. We did this because we need the storage space for hats, shoes, etc for the kids as this is closest to the door that they use the most to come in and out. If you don't need storage space, put art or books there to make it look decorative. I think a set of cubbies is a little more modern looking than the old style sofa tables. |

I like this
http://www.kincaidfurniture.com/item_detail.cfm?pid=6193 I've seen this at a local furniture store and it looks more modern but works well with tradtional/transitional furniture. |
| We have a shelf behind our couch, which serves as a room divider. By chance, the shelf fits the back of the couch exactly, so it looks fine. Our style is modern but our house is old. I cannot see how this arrangement could be considered outdated per se, in our case it's really a necessity since we have a small space. It is super practical when you lie on the couch and want a place to set your glass/book/computer or whatever. |
