| We are in K at a catholic school here and my son has missed a week of school aready. Anyone know the rules on number of missed days and being tardy are allowed? Just curious - |
| Depends on the school. Why don't you ask them? |
|
Public schools usually have 10 days absent and then a letter home saying that it should not exceed a maximum of 15.
Private schools are not funded according to attendance so its anyone's guess - probably no minimums unless there is a protracted illness which means the child has effectively missed class for most of the year and needs to withdraw on medical grounds. |

If your kid is doing well academically, a week out is not a big deal.
Sometimes little ones need time to recover and the school would rather your kid not spread germs in the community or come to school while in pain. Chronic tardies are a sign the family doesn't have it together, and could necessitate a meeting. If a kid is there 80% of the time is understands 80% of the work (on days they are there), that averages to less than 65% of the work being mastered. Kindergarten is a diverse year, though. If your kid can write a sentence or 3, read a book with lots of lines on the page, and understands addition (and maybe subtraction) you are on the right track. (I thought of red shirting each of my boys, and 1st grade is a jump, but retention is a big deal.) |
| From what I understand, the Virginia Independent Schools standard is that anyone missing 5 days or more is suspended, while missing 8 days or more is grounds for expulsion. |
Citation please. |
I expect you mean "...unless they can provide a doctor's note", don't you? |
| Did you catch the poster's name?? |
yes.

| The school will let you know if there is an issue. Otherwise, there is no specific rule, at least at our ADW school. |
