Personal screen time at school?

Anonymous
My DD middle school allows kids to watch streaming movies through personal Netflix/Amazon prime accounts during lunch.

I'd be interested in hearing parents thoughts on this.

Wow. That's crazy.

my son is in middle school. I would be furious! I can't believe this is allowed.

Horrible. Please tell me this is not a private school that you are paying good money for.

I get it. It keeps them quiet. But kids need to learn to socialize in real life.

If kids are allowed to have their phones, how would the school stop it?

At my DD middle school (private) the kids played online games in class. One of the many reasons we left. My DD did all note taking and work on her iPad all through HS. Never seemed interested in goofing off just thought it really helped her academically. Always had teachers compliment and ask her how they could get others to adopt. Seems you have to be self motivated.

OP here. Yes, I understand with the phones but kids are using school issued devices. I'm more interested in parent who give their kids passwords for accounts abd if they realize kids are watching during school. Not a private.

I think it's a stupid policy.

That's awful. Is it a private or a public school?

My kid is in public middle school and he is allowed to use his phone during lunch. I think a lot of public middle schools and high schools are moving in this direction.

I find this hard to believe and think you are trolling. Not so much because of the permissive nature of it but rather from an IT resources perspective. DD complains the school wifi is ridiculously slow (although I guess movie-watching might explain this).

Watching movies on a data plan would similarly drive most parents around a bend when they got the bill.

So, shorter: Either you made this up your kid is pulling your leg.

If you don't want your kid to have screen time at school, then don't send them to school with a phone. You can also change the Netflix and Amazon passwords if you want to remove access. However, by the time they are in middle school there is no reason why every single moment of phone/tablet/computer time needs to be managed and supervised. My middle schooler gets a total of 25 minutes for lunch and this includes an optional recess should he choose to go outside. It's not like he's going to watch a feature length movie during that time.

If he's using the school wifi, then he's not using any data off the phone plan.

See the first thing I said: I find it doubtful a school wifi would suppport multiple kids streaming videos.
