I’ve been saying this for a while. Anyone who thinks this change is only going to impact a handful of players on an ECNL team is kidding themselves—this is going to turn over every ECNL roster at every age at every club in the DMV. |

Now its just the BY bubble parents trying to find any remaining way to hold on to this broken system. Face it, you'll need to compete with your peers. Stop being afraid. You have one more season to play with little kids, then it'll be time to grow up. You know your kid wasn't getting a scholarship anyway so relax.
Except there aren't THAT many younger players who will challenge those Q1 kids because a lot of them, especially the better ones, don't want to play with their grade until HS. Their SOCCER peers are their BY. They probably will be happy to avoid the so-called trap year BUT that's only if you wanted to play HS and HS ball is actually decent enough for your player development (It's not in a lot of places ... and I'm sure the debate whether high-level club players actually play HS will be back soon). This change would work best in terms of minimizing disruption for existing players and teams if they started it at U6 next fall and grew it from there (because yes, SY likely does make more sense for the vast majority of youth soccer -- except those already in the current system).
Spoiler alert! High level soccer players seldom play HS, and often only once committed to a college. Also they often play a different position in HS (ie a WB club playing HS striker) for a variety of reasons, but typically because they’re the best player on the field at all times.
Spoiler alert. Not true for our club or town who have sent girls to the top soccer colleges and pro draft picks. They have almost all played on their HS teams (I can’t think of any that haven’t played HS, but I’m sure there are a couple) and were amazing to watch. |
You all know HS soccer, which is largely a waste of time for the ECNL / GA / MLSN players, isn’t don’t by grade year right? There isn’t a school cohort that is flowing through in step with the a club age cohort. A 14yo is playing against a scrubby 18yo in HS… This whole “grade year” and play HS argument is a farce. |

Not trying to be a jerk, but the top players in club manage their work loads and risk, and often the clubs help to do that for them. Those clubs that don’t, are not rostering Stanford / UNC talent players. |
It’s amusing, because people are convinced it’s some Q4/Q1 swap-a-thon. It isn’t. It’s chaos. And the clubs are going to use it to finally get rid of Karen and her kid that annoy the coaches. And coaches will leave because they’re getting stuck with awful rosters of kids that’s parents are convinced they’ve raised Bench-Messi that was hidden because of birth month, but in reality they were hidden because they were only playing soccer for 7.5-9 hours a week, compared to the kids that were on pitch 15-20 hours a week. The top 5 clubs in the country will stay top 5, the top 6-15 will move around a bit, and 16-25 may move up, may move out of top 25 and everyone else inside the top 26-50 is a crapshoot anyway. And 50+ are perennially awful and are a cointoss against GA or RL in most matches. |
Preach brother! This is exactly correct + how things will go if SY is implemented. |
Easiest check against parental bias: 1) Are opposing coaches having to game plan around your kid? Are opposing team parents getting frustrated with their kids because of your kid? Are opposing team parents talking about your kid after the match? 2) Do random people know your kid from soccer that neither your kid nor you know? 3) Do people neither you nor your kid know stop your kid after games to tell them they enjoyed watching them play? That they are skilled, etc? 4) Is your kid invited often first to off season teams / pick-ups / practices etc by other kids of similar skill, and / or older players? Is your kid “in demand.” (Note, getting invited to be the ringer on a HS team or indoor team does not count.) |

I'm starting to think 1000 is on the table! I'm hearing lots of certainty again that the rest of know is nonsense, lol. As each truth plays out we all get to come back and gloat again. USSF has ensured we get entertainment through 2026. Thank you!!
Great kids don't play HS. There won't be that much disruption. Q4 kids coming down won't affect my kid. I'm getting my popcorn ready! |
This has been a week of change. Don't take that from the BY parents. Let them believe its going to be fine until its not. 2026 will usher in a full revolution here in SoCal. There are THOUSANDS of kids across the region that are incredible players but haven't committed to hours each week in the car to get to the best teams. If you're a Q4 player and you weren't sure if you should commit before, you're going to get in the car now that you get to play with younger kids and shine on the national stage. The level of change on the way is hard to comprehend. |
| ECNL hasn’t released an announcement yet. Bet it will be different from dpl version. |

So based on what we know so far, can I get some advice please? My daughter is a very good NPL player. September 6th grader considering her options. Based on everything I've seen my sober assessment is she would be a decent 2012 ENCL player and a very good 2013 ECNL player. No good clubs nearby and we don't want to drive far to be a decent player on a team.
Should we be reaching out to 2013 pre-ECNL coaches? Should we be taking her around to practices? When do tryouts for ECNL begin? This world was hard to understand before. With the madness now it feels impossible to navigate. Just a parent that wants my kid to thrive and continue to love the game. She's very frustratd on her current team so that isn't an option. We need to make a move but to a 2012 ECNL team feels like a bit much. |
😂 it’s a revolution…if the kids get off their butts…😂 Isn’t that true for any kid at any birth month? |
Hidden gems, but too lazy to stand out. |
I'm trying hard to pull some level of advice out that. Are you saying to start driving now for a 2012 team she won't be a part of next year? I know there's tons of vitriol on this thread but Im truly just a concerned parent curious what others who have gone before me would do. It's already a tough decision to decide how crazy to go with all this. But with what looks to be a dead year in front of us Im triple nervous to screw this up for my kid. I'm not sure I'd classify us as lazy. Our current team is 20 minutes away. Good teams are 1-2 hours away. Its a life changing commitment. To call us lazy is lazy. |
When people argue to go 8-1 or even 7-1, they are sympathetic in giving the kids on the borderline the option to play in their age category or play up. Arguing for 9-1 or 10-1 could be considered lacking trap empathy, agreed. Going 7-1 could be an interesting way to mildly deal with RAE, essentially splitting years for July and August kids. |
