Science at Watkins?

Anonymous
Could those of you who have kids at Watkins tell me about the science classes at Watkins? In particular, can you compare it to what's happening at Maury? http://maurythinktank.blogspot.com/?m=1 Are there similar things happening at Watkins? Thanks!

Anyone?

Science in elementary school is not really that important. Math and languange are much more fundamental.

Anything besides this obvious troll response?

NP. I don't think that's a troll. I also agree that it's not super important in K-5.

I can't speak for Maury, but I've been quite impressed by what I've seen my Watkins first grader study. In the fall she learned all about different habitats, and this past month she's been focused on space. The science curriculum seems pretty advanced for 6-7 year-olds. So is the homework. (We just spent all weekend researching and creating a project that represents the phases of the moon, which she'll then present next week.)

Unsure if this answers OP's question.

It's been a few years but my kids always did lots of of science in the gardens, plus science fair starting in 3rd grade I think. Also the kids go to space camp when they get to Stuart, which is a trip they've been doing for at least 10 years. Maury just started doing the space camp trip last year I believe.

Thank you to the actual Watkins parents who have responded.

To give you a bit more perspective my 2nd grader has done two technology projects this year one on the change in cooking technology over time and one where they had to improve on a piece of technology. There is a science lab and the 3-5 classes go there for experiments.

That sounds great! Thanks for the info.

Those are both part of the Cornerstones Initiative so all 2nd graders completed those in addition to an engineering unit on pollination I believe. Watkins has Foodprints which is a plus. Maury had Think Tank which is a plus. Two different programs. I'd reach out to the schools for a visit or even contact through websites or blogs.

My Watkins first grader was recently selected to participate in some STEM program.

Don't forget reading and writing actually do matter.

Not much science happening in 5th grade at Watkins. Really impressive how social studies is being integrated with ELA but don't yet have that caliber of integration of math and science (at least at 5th), nor really any engaging or challenging science to speak of in 5th.
