Do they usually assign seats prior to check in? My reservation tells me to select seats at the airport

The flight is not till May

Did you book it as the AF flight number, or something else, like as a Delta flight number?

It's operated by Air France, but it's Tarom.

That's your issue, it's a codeshare. It's very difficult to get a seat assignment if you booked a different airline than is operating the flight. You can try calling Tarom directly.

I had to log back into my reservation after booking and I was able to select my seats for most legs of my trip... but mine are AF flights (in May).
