Live in Rockville. We went to the Rio center a few weeks ago hoping to feed the ducks, but the big sign said "NO!".
I have great memories of feeding the ducks at the duck pond when I was a kid. Is it just frowned upon everywhere now? Any ideas? |
Everyone feeds them anyway at the Rio. |
Ahhh, okay. I saw a few people throwing bread down from the bridges, but wasn't sure if they just didn't realize. Good to know. |
Sorry to be a party-pooper, but there is a reason they say not to feed the ducks... It is not good for the ducks or the environment (so not good for us either!)
Also, it's probably good to teach our children to follow the rules even if everyone else breaks them! Check it out if you are interested: https://www.ducks.org/faq.aspx?faqCategoryID=1&faqID=92 |

I am with the PP who cautioned against feeding the ducks. Just like at the zoo, they ask visitors not to feed the animals, there are good reasons not to feed wild animals.
Obviously, people are more aware of environmental issues now than when we are kids, and OP, I am sure that you and your child can create new, wonderful memories that don't hurt innocent animals. How about observing the ducks? Read about them and then find something to talk about that is similar to the book. Or count the ducks? Differentiate male from female, etc. |
OP here. Fair enough. Actually, I was just thinking about the consequences of teaching DS to ignore signs. He can't read yet, but not sure it's the best example for me to ignore the signs and feed the ducks anyway. But, from reading the other post, it seems like it's not a good idea to feed the ducks anywhere. Kind of a bummer though. |
