It seems like at the end of the year, kids will get a report card with grades for 2 semesters, right? But the quarter marking period grades that came out today just show this quarter. So I am guessing that schools will take the average of the two quarters to get the semester grade. If the kid got a 91 one quarter and an 85 the next quarter, I think that's a B for the semester. But then last time he had a grade in the high 80s listed as an A.
In one sense, I feel like none of this really matters - it's only 6th grade. But on the other hand, I've heard that if you're applying for a high school program, they look at grades. I suppose they may look at grades for GT honors classes too. I don't know if a couple of Bs one semester could keep a kid out of either a HS program or a certain track of classes. I'm new to all this and just trying to figure it out. |
| Did your child take algebra or a foreign language in sixth grade? The are the only grades going to college. |
| The actual number does not matter it is 40% quart 1 40% quart 2 and 20% final. A B B is a B, B A B is a B, B A is an A, A B A is an A. |
| And also 89.5 is an A 89.4 is a B |
I think the OP is wondering about high school magnet admissions |
| You got a report card today? |
| OP is almost certainly looking at Edline since report cards show the semester grade. |
| Not every middle school class had a final. What happens then, just the trend? |
| If it is not a high school level class,, there is no semester grade. |
|
Thanks very much! OP here. This is all helpful.
Yes, DC took foreign language, and yes, I saw it on Edline. Yes, I also was wondering about the impact on a magnet application (if DC is still interested or whether his record by then makes it worth applying) or whether even the track of classes in a regular high school could change because of a few Bs. Not sure what impact 6th grade Bs might have later. |
| Magnet decisions are rumored to be mostly on the magnet test score.. |
No one can really tell you with certainty. It depends on so many factors. The magnet app will include a number of teacher recommendations, entrance test score (which matters a lot), app essays...etc. |
