| DS is in K. Is it once a year and then as needed? Thanks |
| Yes, but as you mentioned you can request another as needed. I actually prefer a second one because they are not as rushed. |
Yes, you get 7-10 minutes with your teacher a year. They also don't write comments on report cards either. Just a bunch of I's and P's. Communication is awful. |
| What is holding parents back from making appointments with teachers to meet? I'm a teacher and nobody ever comes to PT conferences. I send out emails that I am available after school and before school on certain days. If you want to talk more in depth, why not ask for a meeting? I can even do phone conferences although it isn't as easy to share student work but at least it is a conversation. |
| PP I have never had a teacher do this. I requested have had extra meetings when issues were going on but not otherwise. |
| I've mostly done extra conferences when there is a problem and then the whole grade level team meets with the parents and counselor. Once or twice, a student had a issue only in my class and the department head sat in. Otherwise, parents and I usually deal with things via email. If needed, I send work samples using the camera on my iPhone. I've done 15-30 minute conferences before school and during my lunch with parents who need to see the County tests. |
Our first report card of the year had comments, not on the report card itself but on a separate document. I'll wait and see if the second report card has it as well. |
I agree with this. Communication is awful. The PPs are right, that if your kid is having issues, they'll schedule other conferences. But, if your kid is doing fine, and at grade level, there really isn't any more communication after that first conference. |
Have a teacher do what? We are required to be available for conferences when parents request them. |
| Communication is not awful at all. |
What grade? My child is in 2nd and we have never had comments on any report card the last 3 years. Just a typed-up sheet of letter "grades" |
| I was impressed with the MS parent-teacher conference as the comments were quite helpful and constructive. I had not been impressed with the ES conferences and comments on report cards except the K-2 which for me was all pre 2.0 (but not sure if it was the teachers for 2.0). But the good news is that MS the teachers were super prepared. |
1st Grade at a Maryland Focus School. I actually found both the written comments and the teacher's in-person remarks super helpful. The teacher (who I'd been a little unsure about in the beginning) really seemed to "get" my kid, who is really strong in some areas but has a tendency toward laziness. |
| It's a dumb system. One conference early in the year, before DC has even had a chance to settle in. Crazy that there's not a second one in the back half of the year. No written comments, nothing, other than check/check + assignments coming home. Not helpful. |
| If you would like another conference, what is preventing you from asking for one? |
