We don't want a puppy and don't want anything like a pit (seems mostly what is available at DC shelters). Looking for a medium size dog we can run with but also is over the 'potty training' stages. Open to most other breeds at this point.
Check out Washington Animal Rescue League. They have lots of wonderful dogs that make for good family dogs. We rescued our 1yo collie mix from them and he was fully house-trained when we got him, though we had to work with him to overcome some fears about his new environment.
Lab Rescue of LRCP is in Annandale and has tons of rescue Labs (including seniors).
We don't live in the DC area now but want to say that we just adopted a 7 year old female lab mix (mostly lab) this past summer. She's a wonderful dog and great with kids!! |
Did you look through petfinder? You can sort by age.
There are lots of dogs running around the dog parks. Just get some dog treats and they will jump in your car.
Shelters are a great first step. Also, Petfinder.com. Also, Oldies But Goodies Cocker Spaniel Rescue.
The Fairfax animal shelter has lots of dogs, of all sizes, ages, and temperaments. They go through dogs very quickly, so if they don't have any dogs that meet your criteria now, check their webpage frequently and be prepared to go to the shelter quickly to meet a likely-looking dog.

www.petfinder.com
You can search by breed, sex and age. It will bring up dogs that match your search that are in rescue groups, shelters etc in the surrounding area. Thanks for adopting an older dog OP |
No advice on where to look, but I just want to say that even with an older dog you should plan on spending a little time on house training. Even if they are already trained, a new environment can lead to some accidents. But it will be much, much easier and faster than with a puppy.
