Hello,
I hear major redistricting will occur in Fairfax County. I am concerned because we will be relocating next year and are hoping to buy a home that feeds into McLean, Oakton or Madison high schools. I understand there are certain areas that have been traditionally spared from being redistricted, such as the Chesterbrook District (feeds into McLean HS) and certain parts of Vienna (into Oakton or Madison). Can anyone speak to this? Should we rent first? Has the County set anything in stone? Thank you. |
Look at the on-line boundary maps. Chesterbrook !!!!!!!!! on the border so buy away! Oakton has weird boundaries and some of madison could always move. Not much logic to boundaries in FCPS but Chesterbrook can't go to Arlington or Falls Church. |
There's nothing set in stone. You should aim for Chesterbrook if you can afford it. The Kent Gardens area also goes to McLean and is not as expensive as Chesterbrook. As the PP noted, the boundaries for Oakton are weird and seem to change frequently. Madison's reputation is declining. Woodson is considered stronger than Madison. |
I don't know if the School Board will have the intestinal fortitude to go forward with a comprehensive redistricting. But if they do, it's probably best to buy in one of the neighborhoods that is so close to your desired high school (and middle school) that it would be very difficult to be redistricted.
If you're trying to live in the McLean HS pyramid (which is has about the same boundaries as Longfellow MS), Chesterbrook and Kent Gardens would be difficult to switch out of the McLean HS pyramid. Most Franklin Sherman ES students attend Longfellow MS/McLean HS. A smaller group attend Cooper MS/Langley HS. |
Very helpful info so far. Thank you. |
