What kind of OTC vaginal cream for little girl with irritation

Anonymous
About 5 months ago, my daughter went through this period where she was itching/touching herself a lot and having accidents. Her preschool teacher recommended some kind of cream and I can't remember what it was. In the last week, she has started having constant pee accidents and I noticed today she was touching herself again. I can't think of what cream that was! Would ask the teacher but school is closed. Anyone? She didn't recommend a brand per se, just the active ingredient and I found the corresponding brand...

Sounds like a yeast infection OP. Go to the pediatrician to also rule out diabetes.

If she's having accidents, then likely a urinary tract infection. I would definitely take her to the doc.

Yes, take her to the doctor ASAP.

The accidents lead me to think uti too. But for normal redness and itchiness, our ped suggests triple paste diaper cream. For even elementary age girls.

I would absolutely get a preschooler checked out for something like that before putting OTC creams on it. I agree with pp's that it sounds an awful lot like a UTI.

Sounds like a UTI. give her that OTC urinary pain relief asap - AZO makes it, and take her to the doctor who can test for a UTI versus yeast infection. If it works, it's a UTI.

But no cream cures a yeast infection topically anyway - if she has one, maybe she will get prescribed diflucan, and meanwhile, she needs tons of probiotics. I guess it's possible that pee accidents are actually the discharge coming out.

Thanks everyone. In response to the above post, it's definitely pee coming out

We just moved and aren't established with a new pediatrician yet. Hopefully getting her an appt ASAP is not going to be a huge hassle!

Uh, she needs a doctors opinion.....

For irritation alone, Desitin will work very well. But I agree with PPs that this sounds like a UTI and she needs antibiotics. Go to urgent care already! She is miserable!

If it's not a uti, I recommend mixing a little aquaphor with hydrocortisone

Where are you located? Maybe we can recommend a ped

You can also just go to urgent care if you don't have a ped.

Thanks! I am in Vienna. I called the one we were going to use at 7:15 this morning (they were supposed to open at 7) and no answer. I think I'm going to take her to urgent care.

Patient first is good and quick but a little hike from you. There's also an Inova urgent care in Vienna which is pretty good but waits can be long.

No recommendation of peds, sorry! When we lived in Vienna we trekked to Centreville.
