CTY Summer Class

Anonymous
Hi!
I'm considering sending my DD to CTY's day summer camp (science), but the price is putting me off a bit ($2.4K) for a 10 week class. Can any of you who have children that have taken one of these day camp science classes share your child's experience with me. Was it really worth it? We've never taken a CTY class in person before...just their online classes. Thanks a bunch!

That sounds cheap. Are you sure it is 10 weeks of camp?

DD only did the sleep away camps. Mount H, Lancaster, and Hawaii. Lancaster was a repeat favorite. Still networks with many many friends from camp. Impressive group of kids from all over the world and scattered all over in great schools and careers. One of the best decisions we ever made was to pay for those camps. Did the online classes as well and they filled a need but not the same thing by a long shot.

We did the summer sleepaway camps for our two DDs, but through Duke TIP. We've convinced my niece to do the overnight CTY camp next summer. My DDs adored the experience. I'm particularly excited about my niece going, as she is currently surrounded by kids for whom going to college -- much less a really good college -- is not on the radar screen. She is very smart, but will benefit enormously from being exposed to motivated, intellectually-interested kids.

Is the 10 week class on JH campus? We have done the 1 week at Sandy Spring and will probably do the 3 week class this summer. My DD loved it last year.

Summer classes are definitely 3 weeks, whether it's the day classes for the younger kids or the residential programs for the middle/high school.
This will be our first year of doing residential after a few years of the day program. My kids have really enjoyed it, and neighbor's kid who did the sleepaway was also thrilled. As PP said, one of the best thing about the program is not just the great courses, but also the social connections these kids get to make.
Not cheap, but high quality program.

Best part was DS finding kids he clicked with who are interested in the same things he is interested in ... has kept up 2 friendships. I didn't think the class seemed particularly challenging, but it was fun he got to collaborate with like-minded kids. He and a few of his classmates who also went all loved it.

He hasn't had the same kind of bonding at other camps.

I used to be a Program Assistant at Sandy Spring CTY many years ago. The kids there are crazy smart and the courses are very interesting and seemed to challenge the kids appropriately. It was a well run program. Definitely worth it.

The classes are three weeks. My kids have both loved the day classes in Alexandria. Not cheap but very good program.

I wish we could afford it. My kid would really enjoy these camps. When we had him tested way back when I had no idea that everything they offered was so pricey and we wouldn't be able to take advantage of any of it.
