Travel Discussion
| We are planning a trip to Charleston with our 2 yo. We want to save $$$ on airfare by driving (plus, we have a couple free car rental certificates we want to use). Is it too big of a hassle to drive? We want this to be as painless as possible and will fly if that is one way to make the trip easier. |
| We have driven to Charleston once with our then almost 2 year old, as well as St. Simons Island, GA (a couple more hours south). Personally, I don't find the drive down there that bad and once you get out of DC, there is rarely any traffic. It is much more pleasant than the drive north up 95 which we have also done several times. The two times we have gone we stopped over night - once in Florence, SC and once in Fayetteville, NC, but the drive back we did not stop since we were traveling during the day. Our son is good in the car and we have done several long car trips with him now that he is almost 4. We do not do the DVD player, but do get him several new books and toys to play with on the drive. THankfully, he has been pretty good every time. |
| We always drive to Hilton Head, near Charleston. I mentioned in another post that the key is to get up early and leave, around 4 am, while the little one is still in pjs, and stop about 4 hrs later to get breakfast. That way you are halfway there so it's less time in the car with an awake child. Bring a dvd and plenty of things to distract and keep them occupied. |

We drive there twice a year with a 3 yo and an infant. Even when we just had one child, I thought that driving was no more of a hassle than flying. At least driving you don't have to pack as well, can bring all the beach gear, etc.
We have done it all in one day with a long lunch stop, which was pretty brutal. Since then we stop for the night with a friend in Raleigh, which is about half way, then wake up early so we are on the road by 7 or so. But I also like PP's idea of leaving at 4 am and doing it all in one day. Maybe we will try that next time. |
