The death of a 30-year-old African-American tourist in Goa last week has come under intense scrutiny, with the issue being raised in the legislative assembly and the state chapter of the Human Rights Law Network saying it will write to the Goa police to demand a serious investigation. Caitanya Holt died on January 12, from allegedly choking on sludge in a rice field in the North Goa village of Korgaon. According to newspaper reports, he was chased into the field and beaten up by locals and the police after being mistaken for a robber. What happened before that is unclear. The Times of India reported that Holt, who was “mentally unstable”, dropped his bag in a house in Korgao and started “misbehaving with the locals”. He “tried to grab the keys of scooters in the locality”, rushed to the village’s main junction, and started “behaving abnormally”. When local residents tried to control him, he raced into a paddy field some 1.5 kilometres away and began ploughing it. He died following an assault on him there. http://scroll.in/article/802010/racism-and-vigilantism-an-african-american-tourists-lynching-raises-troubling-questions-in-goa [ edited by admin to comply with copyright laws. ] |

More so than the troubling questions regarding African Americans in America?
|
| OP, perhaps a mentally unstable criminal of American origin should have been in a US jail instead of harassing folks in Goa? |
|
The reports are conflicting and after the police attack a person with a mob, I wouldn't be so quick to believe that their reports of the victims mental status are accurate.
This is unsettling but I've always heard AA would not be welcome in India. |

Apparently one doesn't have to be black to be mistaken for a robber in India.

Lmao! Yea u and ur Indian relatives believe that story if u want too |
|
The mob mentality and general violence in India is terrifying. I don't know why anyone travels there.
I have friends with relatives there, but the only ones who travel home to visit are those with extremely wealthy families who have compounds with security. That's very telling. |
| Isn't goa where Americans go to do lots of drugs |
|
The anti-india ignorance and bias in this thread is astounding.
Folks, do you know just a tiny bit about world history? Have spent real time abroad? Still are in elementary school? |
Um, we read the news. All it took was a doze news articles about women being gang raped and murdered in broad daylight in public for me to remove India from my bucket list. FYI, there are plenty of other countries to travel to over a lifetime. Why bother with India? |
How many people live in India, smarty pants? How many languages do they speak? Your thinking is similar to this: because of all the mass shootings in the US, I won't visit Canada any more |
See the timing of the thread. Someone intentionally went searching for derogatory news about India, with the intent to malign. Pure evil! Enjoy your hatred. |
Not the same thing at all. Generally speaking, an American woman can travel safely alone in the US, Canada and dozens of civilized countries. In India, that's simply not the case today. Does that mean that it's impossible to travel there without incident? Obviously not. But why bother traveling to India given the issues when there are so many other better countries to visit? PS - this doesn't make me a racist, needlessly worrisome, an unseasoned traveler, etc. |
Of course, so don't travel. An enlightening piece of information related to this article. Goa mentioned in OPs article is a city known for easy availability of drugs. Which is why tourists all over the world, flock there. |

I'm not the OP, but in response to a pp: just do a google news search and you'll come up with tons of recent incidents. India isn't Mayberry. Stop pretending like it is. |
