Does your stylist/colorist actually listen to you?

I feel like mine doesn't, and I have never had this problem before. He'll say oh I'm just going to make a little tweak and it ends up being a major change, that I have to go back in and have fixed. When he does what I want it comes out good. Is this normal of NW DC salons or do I just go to an egocentric "artiste"?

I would not put up with that. It shouldn't be a tug of war between you and the stylist.

I used to go to a guy in NW DC who was like that. Paid big bucks and came out with something I hadn't asked for. I now go to Hair Cuttery, pay $16, and come out with the cut I wanted. Go figure!

That's a good way of describing it. After he fixes the latest, I think I'm done.

I went through that -- my stylist wanted to see me in short hair and I wanted it longer. Both styles work for me, so it was just a matter of preference -- not her having a better eye or judgment than I did. I finally switched after a year; the new guy encouraged me to grow it out, cut my bangs and gave me highlights to distract from the shagginess. It looks so great now and I get tons of compliments.
