how many nights in hospital for c-section?

Anonymous
I learned Friday that I have to have a c-section. I am sort of bummed but such is life. I asked a ton of questions but forgot about the hospital length stay. I am having the operation at 10:00am.

How many nights were you there?

THANKS!

five days covered by insurance....you can leave earlier if you feel ok and doctor says fine..

My last c-section I was in the hospital for 4 days. My doctor would have let me go home after 3 days, but I wasn't quite ready yet.

3 nights. Could have stayed an additional 1 but I was doing well, so was baby and i just wanted to get home and start learning our new routine and figuring things out.

4 nights. It was nice to stay in the hospital and have people there to help us out...it's hard to get around after a c-section.

By the way, I was feeling OK when I went home and ended up overdoing it - stairs. Don't do stairs if you can help it for a few weeks after you get home. I eventually just went down and up once per day, if that, for a few weeks.

My insurance covered 4 nights but we left after 3 nights because we couldn't get any sleep with all the hospital staff in and out at all hours. I'd see how you are feeling and then make a decision.

Insurance is required to cover 4 nights of hospital stay for a c-section delivery. You can ask to be discharged early if you feel well.

I ended up staying the full 4 nights, but that was because the baby was in the NICU and wasn't discharged at the same time as me (in fact they kindly let me stay most of the "extra" day as well, we left in the evening when the normal discharge time is 11 am or noon). With my physical recovery, I would've been fine at home after 3 nights.

I stayed as long as possible in the hospital in order to have the extra help on had (e.g. the nurses can take the baby to the nursery while you shower, eat, sleep).
Word of warning: it can be hard to rest in a hospital unless you alert your nurse that you don't want visitors or any extra people coming into your room. There can be a lot of interruptions!

3 nights. They would have kept me 4 but I really wanted to go home.

The standard is you leave on day 4, with c-section being day 0. If all is well and you want to, the doctor may release you on day 3. Good luck.

I went into labor on Tuesday 4/28 at 5pm. Went to the hospital at 8pm as I had to have a c-section and labor was getting worse.

Had baby via c-section on Wednesday 4/29 at 12:07am.

I was released on Saturday, 5/2 at noon.

I was there three full nights - I am sure it depends on your surgery, how you are heeling, your doctor and possiblu your insurance.

What everyone said is exactly right. If you think you'll want to get home soon (I'm always anxious to get home) then you need to get moving asap and they need to see that you're up and able to move around (i.e., up and down the halls). Also, you'll have had a bowel movement which is a big deal too!

This is good advice. While you'll be anxious to go home, it's really good to be in the hospital where you're forced to relax and take it easy. It's good for your overall recovery.

I found that I recovered better at home. As a c-section patient, I was checked on at the crack of dawn by the residents (3-4am) and a really late night visit by the nurses. I found getting sleep near impossible but once I was home I slept soundly in between feedings.

My first child I stayed 3 nights as I wanted to get home. With the second (an attempted VBAC), I stayed 4 nights as I knew once I got home my first child would want mommy all the time. So it was easier to rest in the hospital without him.

If I might ask, why are you having the c-section?
