Mid-century modern furniture reproductions.

Does anyone have any experience with the reproductions that are cheaper than the Scandinavian imports? Yes. they're a lot cheaper, but I wonder about quality.

It probably depends on the company doing the reproducing. You could get an unlicensed but well made copy, or a poor quality copy. Apartment Therapy has had posts comparing some stores. I expect you'll have better luck there-- DCUMs seem to like their chic shabby.

Same PP- What's the piece your hoping to find knocked off?

Design within Reach may be able to help you. Stores in Gtown and Bethesda.

Room and Board has some items, and their quality is good.

23:06/ :07 here-- Design Within Reach will sell licensed items, not reproductions. But, anyone wishing to go to DWR shouldn't forget about the Adams Morgan store, http://www.dwr.com/category/find+a+studio/adamsmorgan.do, which is bigger and better than the G'town store. DWR does have sales, including one on Knoll products recently. The mailing list is helpful for that.

Room and Board is a great suggestion, and the quality will be lovely. They sell both licensed and unlicensed pieces, and will tell you plainly which is which. I don't know how low OP was hoping to find the price, though. For example, I have been dreaming about a marble-topped Saarinen Tulip Table and will probably end up with the "inspired by" Saarinen Table from R & B. It's still $1,899 vs. $2,507 for the real thing from DWR. Vastu on 14th St. would probably charge a little more for offering the cachet of shopping with an "Indie" locally-owned business.

Still, lots of other stores sell reproductions of varying quality, though they're unlikely to be local, so OP will have to rely on reviews. Again, a quick search on Apartment Therapy's blog will turn up a fairly recent discussion.

If you're looking for mid-century modern even cheaper than Design "Out of" Reach or Room and Board, CB2, West Elm and even IKEA have some great pieces. Obviously not heirloom, but the right lines. That Tulip table has been knocked off by those stores very nicely, for example.

Tulip seeker here-- Very true, but they haven't gotten the proportions and graceful curve just right. It's probably intentional for proprietary reasons. Also no marble tops.

I don't know enough about what OP wants in terms of price/ quality balance, but I believe CB2, West Elm, and Ikea are great for minor accents rather than large pieces because they're sometimes pretty insubstantial on closer examination. I really am too lazy to dig up that AT thread, but lots of commenters weighed in on online knock off stores, discussing customer service, quality, etc. Some got pretty high marks.

Anyone know of good Wegener that is relatively cheap. Ex. Ox chair.

Ok- here's a recent AT thread that reviews some knock-off shops as well as the obligatory ethical discussion:

Here's a reproduction Ox chair that's a 10th of the price of an original and pretty well priced for an armchair in general. I don't know about the quality or store's reputation:

Totally agree with this.

That is the one (Ox) I was thinking of. Is there any way to get an idea of quality?

Again, I think Apartment Therapy and other design blogs are a good resource. Do a search for any feedback that has been posted about the store, or ask a question on one of the "open threads".

This query has been useful for me, too, because it introduced me to a bunch of new "Tulips"!
