Alternative vacation spot now that we're supposed to avoid the Caribbean? Looking for ideas!

Anonymous
We were hoping to get away somewhere warm before the baby arrives, and had been researching places in the Caribbean. Any thoughts now that it looks like the CDC is going to issue a warning re the entire Caribbean and maybe Florida?

Bonus points for suggestions of a location and a hotel. Requirements: warm, somewhat romantic.

GO!

We're also going on vacation in the middle of march and wanted to go some place warm. We were thinking Mexico, but now we're thinking CA.

What's to avoid? Clueless, here.

Holy wow, I totally thought this post was an overreaction to something minor but then I read this article linked in the other post about this:

I'm from Southern California and its amazing to visit, and although March it will be warmer than here, it won't be beach weather. Arizona is warmer and has nice resorts.

All of Florida will be nice. On a babymoon I'd probably head to Miami so I could eat my way through that city. How much $$ do you want to spend?

Having been to the Caribbean numerous times, I find this a bit scary, but I'd also say context matters a bit here. There are things you can do to greatly minimize your chances of getting bitten- wear repellent, cover up at night, and spend your time in breezy places. If you're staying up on a hill or by the water, you're much less likely to get eaten up than if you were hanging out in a rainforest.

I'd guess it won't be long before this hits the U.S., unfortunately.

I'm imagining a pregnant OP isn't going to enjoy a 12 hour flight.

I'll be about 25 weeks when we head to Hawaii- purposefully have a layover to break it up, but not too worried about the flight (nor is my doc). Doubly happy that is our plan now that the Carribbean seems off limits-- I get totally eaten by mosquitoes no matter what I do. Ended up borrowing prescription antihistamine cream from a doc at our resort on our honeymoon b/c it wa so bad!

The Big Island currently has dengue fever.

I'm the PP, also pregnant (23 wks). We're doing a layover and I'm sure it won't be the most comfortable, but I'll make it work.
