Suggestions please. Never been there.
We want to go in June. Where should we stay? Is there a "good" side of the lake? Any suggestions on renting nice homes or cabins? TIA |
We went a couple of years ago for Memorial Day. I can't remember where we stayed but I did notice that a lot of houses are right on the main road which is very busy and commercial, and it is not always easy to tell that from the online listings. Also, the houses are pretty much jammed together all around the lake so there isn't a lot of privacy. It was fun but in a Lake Tahoe kind of way rather than, say, lakes in New Hampshire or Maine. There was a great little beach for kids with a playground--that sticks in my mind as the best part about it. |
| We went for 1 week about 4 years ago with extended family and rented a house (supposedly lakefront, but actually on a tiny tributary into the lake) I cant' remember the realtor we used. The kids favorite part was the golf cart that we used to ride over to the little private beach for the community we were in. The house was beautiful, on several acres but in a vacation community. It was remote, there were scratch marks left by a bear on the trash bin outside one morning! There are nice hiking trails near the state park beach as a pp noted. There is another state park nearby with a waterfall (?swallowtail falls?) where some people go tubing. My mom became ill while we were there (would have happend anywhere, not related to the vacation destination!) and we spent alot of time at the hospital.(The nurses there were absolute angels, btw) That's why I can't remember more details, sorry! |

My family has vacationed at Deep Creek for many years, and we love it. One of the nice things about it, is that there are many different parts of the lake. I disagree with the previous poster who suggested that the houses are crammed together and all off the main road. That certainly is true in some cases, but there are other parts where the houses are on bigger lots, and very spacious.
I'd say offhand that the northern part of the lake is a bit more developed (and tends to have nicer houses?) than the southern part... but I think there are nice houses everywhere. I think its Long and Foster that has a great website with lots of pictures. You can't always tell how far your neighbors will be, but if that's important to you, just talk to the realtor. Its not a "beach" lake. There is very little sand. It is mostly mountains, boating, etc. If you're looking for a lake where you're going to sit out on a beach, its a poor choice. Having said that, I think its beautiful and peaceful. |
