Purdue or Harvey Mudd, depending on fit.

Agree on Harvey Mudd and Purdue. I'd add NU and UMD though. Finances might be a consideration. Congrats!

I struggle to find the pros of VT as it compares to UF, but he’s most concerned about being too far from home. He will be also to fly home all major breaks and then two extra weekends of his choosing.

I recognize the value of living in a different part of the country, but being able to get home without plane delays and cancelled flights is so nice. Flying adds a lot of hassle and restrictions.

Interested in both theatre and neuroscience. Finances not a consideration

Tufts seems like the best school but I probably have a NE bias

I'd go UVA over Tufts myself

Theatre person here. I'd go w/ Tufts.

Don’t know about CS but people who go to Denison seem to really like it/have a strong network

yup! this is his only hesitation. IF UF were of equal distance he would not even hesitate.

Economics/Finance/Public Policy

Which would you pick?

Is your kid more invested in the finance side of the equation or public policy? If the former, I’d go with Wharton or Columbia. Otherwise, Georgetown.

Yes depends on the focus among the interests. Columbia has the best known policy grad school of the three but Penn also has interesting policy opportunities (including a lot of Philly based work which can offer good experiences). Georgetown obviously is in DC with tons of policy orgs. Wharton is clearly the premier finance school but folks there are definitely business oriented, less “policy”. Can’t really go wrong so congrats!

Any sense of the relatiev stress culture in these schools?

Specialization electrical engineering or air and space engineering. Purdue tuition half from the others two. Which one to choose ?

Purdue, particularly if doing aerospace. Interesting factoid, Purdue has more astronauts than any other school besides the academies.

UMD Honors (instate tuition and great engineering program, but not a great social fit at all)

Princeton (generous aid, Ivy, loves the campus, and residential housing, it's okay as far as social fit)

Northwestern (likes the campus, school culture, great social fit, and engineering program, but hates the weather)

Rice (the best social fit, loves the school culture, and student is a native Houstonian, but the engineering program is not the strongest out of the group)

Go with either Princeton or Northwestern. Trust me.

Vassar. Purely based on outcomes. Do a search on LinkedIn and see how the students in CS have fared at these schools.

I meant branding. Not "outcomes."

VA resident. Plans to go to grad school for sports science-related career. Chose these schools based on size but still D1 and campus life.

Davidson without question. The students absolutely love it and the education is incomparable. Plus, the alumni network is incredibly strong. Congrats!!!

Totally agree that Davidson is best school and amazing education. But specifically for Sport Science look hard at Wake. For some reason it attracts kids of famous people including sports stars. And has an AI sports science lab well funded. Would only pick that over Davidson if positive of sports path. Would pick Davidson and Wake over other too unless cost is factor.

A kid should know if they want Davidson or Wake--they are quite different. I would pick based on this and not on the academic quality (which is roughly equal). I toured with my twins and one was 100% in camp Davidson and the other was 100% in camp Wake. We toured a lot of schools and these were some of the only ones where their opinions diverged to such a degree.

We toured Davidson, expecting to love it (on paper) but we were all quite turned off. A definite no for us. So it seems very fit based.

Same thing happened to DC at both Wake and U of Richmond. Funny how you mention yourself in the decision, though.

Why is that funny? Parents can't have an opinion?
