Especially a young one? My kindergartner was flagged in (sn) preschool for having attentional issues. This year has been difficult for him at school. His behavior at home and at school seems to be marked by periods of loss of control where he just sort of loses all sense of self-regulation. We need to do timeouts to get himself together and at school they have not been handling these moments well. I've googled around but I can't get a sense of whether this dx fits him or not.

Step away from Dr. Google and take make an appointment with a developmental pediatrician. Children's or KKI will do.
Sometimes it's immaturity and sometimes it's ADHD. |
It's hard to tell at that age especially with boys. In a few years, it is easier to recognize since NT kids mature and ADHD kids still act many years younger in terms of impulsivity.
We watched playtime during before care and over time it was proven out the kids who were impulsively aggressive towards other kids remained so until treatment.
For us it was a literal inability to keep hands to himself. It was not that he didn't want to, it was just that he seemed unable to control himself. He was pushing and shoving before he even knew what he was doing. It became obvious by 3rd grade.
