booking hotels online with kids under two

Anonymous
so if a hotel room says 2 people max...does that count a child under two? i will probably end up calling the hotel so i don't get a nasty surprise when i get there but any experience out there on this?

Where will they sleep? If they sleep with you, then no problem. If they need cribs, there may not be enough room. You should definitely call to check in that case. Hope you're going someplace fun!

When I've booked online, mainly through sites like hotels.com or priceline, they ask for the number of adults and children and then ask for the kids ages. We've had no problem booking a king bed room, which I assume is a 2 person room, with 3 of us, one being a child under 2.

When I book online, I never indicate how many children will be in the room and it has never been a problem. We do often look for hotels that have suites or junior suites so we have a larger room, but I have never had an issue at check in. However, there are smaller sized rooms at some hotels, so if it says 2 people max, I might call because that sounds like one of them. Also, you can usually tell by the beds how big it will be - two double beds is a large enough room for 4 people and a king room is usually fine, too.

I just finished booking hotels for my family of five (one kid under 2). I had a lot of difficulty finding hotels that would take five in one room. For ones I was interested in but couldn't book online due to the number of people in a room, I called and each time I was told that they would not allow five in a room even though one of the kids would only be one at the time of travel. I would have to book two rooms. Like you, OP, I would not have wanted to arrive and find out that we couldn't stay or would have to pay for an extra room.

regardless of how many beds/cribs there are, the hotel needs to know how many PEOPLE will be in the room for fire code reasons. If the hotel is full, at the maximum capacity for fire purposes, you don't want to be turned away because you didn't mention you were 4 instead of 2. we ran into this situation a few years ago. I would call the hotel to clarify.
