| I wrote a draft of a book a decade ago and am thinking to work on it again! But it's on an old computer from like 2002 and I don't have the electrical cord anymore to turn it on! Anyone have ideas on how I can get it on? Or get access to the hard drive? |

Find someone with computer knowledge. They can likely remove the hard drive and set it up in an external case to connect to a modern computer.
If that won't work, then you have to turn to data recovery services. $$$$. |
| Google the exact name of the computer + the words power cord. Buy it online. |
| If it's a desktop from '02, chances are the power cord is still standard, especially if its a PC. You could probably just order one or find one in a thrift store or from a neighbor. |
| Call the Geek Squad or something....they might be able to help you out. |
| Great ideas! Thanks! |

| Call Jason Shanker from Clear Tech Advice. |
| So I found an adapter that fit but when i tried to turn it on it started for a second then shut down!!!! Now I'm worried the computer is broken! |
| pick it up and take it to MicroCenter in fairfax. and cross your fingers. Not sure where else to go. |

Do NOT keep trying to turn it on.
Call an experienced computer technician. They will take the hard drive out and get your data. It is not that hard and should not cost you too much $. |

Please don't go to geek squad - they don't know what they are doing at all.
Call a local tech. They will remove the hard drive, plug it into another machine and get the files for you. Should take about 20 minutes. |
| I've done this myself several times and only have basic computer knowledge. If your computer won't turn on and even if there is hard drive damage you can retrieve files from the hard drive by mounting it to a working computer. Sure, you can pay someone to do this too, but I had no trouble doing it myself with a bit of help from google and an external hard drive mount. |
I have to disagree with this recommendation. A friend of mine used him, she said he screwed up her computer and then stopped returning her calls. |
