We're buying a beach home that has these cabinets below: (not the actual picture but similar)
They're well-made and oak and we don't want to do a total kitchen remodel. Neither do we want to just stick a slab of granite on them. The current counter tops are in pretty bad condition so we do want to replace them. The whole place has a vintage type feel to it. i.e. If they were white I'd consider butcher block countertops. Any thoughts on what type or color of counter-top to go with? http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa77/kitchenkelly/DSC00071-1.jpg |

Some white silestone.
We bought a beach place that had out of date cabinets that were solid wood and in good shape, we had new doors made and the cabinets painted. It was very affordable to do that, a new backsplash and countertops. Just a thought. |

Personally I'd paint or stain them, but that's me. If you don't want to paint, I'd change out the hardware to something a bit more modern and embrace the oak and go with something brownish.

If you paint them, then something dark.

| Get rid of the cabinets, paint them or go with a really dark stain. They look like they're left over from 1972. |

I'd totally paint them. Since it is a beach house, I'd do them white or blue like this.

| Don't put granite on old cabinets. Lipstick on a pig. For now, I would paint the cabinets and get a new laminate countertop. Then when you can afford it, do a full remodel. |
| DO NOT do that, get rid of the cabinets |
| Paint will chip, especially in a rental |
| Yikes. I really hate those cabinets. So ugly! They don't look well made at all. And the soffet is bad. |
+1. Don't waste granite on those. |
+2 Paint the cabinets, get laminate countertops, and either save up for a remodel or just live with the minor facelift since its a beach home.
|
| Honestly I'd get rid of those cabinets. If that isn't an option, just do whatever's cheap until you can actually fix it all. |
| IKEA or Rta cabinets and an inexpensive granite |
| I say keep them and get cool laminate countertops from IKEA, an undermount sink, and swap out the hardware. Embrace the funk. |
