Hate Fish - alternatives/supplements for Omega-3s?

Anonymous
TTC and my OB/Gyn recommended some fish oil supplements to take since I can't stand fish or shellfish. The only problem is that the capsules smell even worse than fish and have a horrible aftertaste and I figure if they make me ill now that's not going to improve if I get pregnant. There are a million different supplements out there -- can anybody recommend a brand of Omega-3 supplements that don't have fish oil?

I take Nordic Naturals fish oils capsules which I get at whole foods. They are lemon flavored and I honestly cannot taste or smell the lemon, let alone ANY hint of fish. I would never know that I was taking fish oil.

If you're on (or open to) a prescription prenatal, Prenexa uses a plant-based DHA source. It's one capsule (although HUGE) for the DHA and multi, and coated so there is no real taste (if anything it is sort of sweet, almost chocolatey).

"Expecta", a non fish source of omega 3 especially designed for pregnant women...

You can get a decent dose of omega 3s just by eating a handful of raw walnuts. Great with jumbo raisins or dates, or tossed on salad, or mixed with chopped chicken, green apples, and celery, and your favorite mayo. I love grapeseed oil vegenaisse, which is in the fridge case at Whole Foods or My Organic Market. The walnut halves at Trader Joe's are the best.

I have been taking chewable ones that I found at Trader Joes. They are marketed for kids, but they contain Omega 3 and DHA. 200mg each. They taste like gummy candies and don't have any fishy taste at all. I haven't mentioned this to my doctor yet, but don't see what problems there would be.

The Nordic Naturals are third-party tested and contain no mercury. They're made from sardines and other small fish----not the large fish that have a higher risk of containing mercury.

Omacor is a prescription fish oil pill that does not smell and is even safe to take during pregnancy. Ask your Dr about it...he/she could give you a prescription...is covered by all major insurance plans.

Spectrum also is a good brand - I think Whole Foods has it. It is made with small fish, so little mercury risk, and I didn't notice fishiness when I took it during pregnancy.

Flax seed has lots of good Omega 3's as well. I use it in my kid's oatmeal, my smoothies, weekend pancakes, even bread, pizza dough, muffins, etc. Maybe a slight nutty taste, but nothing offensive or long-lasting.

I also recommend flaxseed, flaxseed meal, and walnuts. All delicious and healthy sources of omega-3s. You can buy omega-3 eggs from hens fed flax, too.
