Homework Supervision Time?

How much time do you spend supervising (support by encouragement/proximity) homework for your
1-5 child? How much time does you child spend each night on HW? Are they independent? Do the assignments expect parent involvement?

DD is pretty independent with homework, except occasionally with writing assignments.

3rd grade
1/2 hour homework
She does it at the dinner table each night after dinner, while I clean up/read a book of my own/pay bills/and generally help her if needed. No real parental involvement expected except perhaps with an occasional special project.

It would be interesting if the posters noted the schools as well. Thank you.

Does the 1/2 hour or so listed by posters so far include any required reading time (below 4th grade)?

Grade 1 (Beauvoir)
20-30 minutes expected (actually, not sure the teachers have ever explicitly asked us to supervise homework)
about 20 minutes tops actual supervision (physical proximity and available to answer questions)
I don't supervise the reading part of the homework; Reading your choice of book is required a minimum of 15 minutes every night, and the teachers provide a reading log for kids to write the book name and comment on how they like the book. Left on her own, DD would probably stay up until she finished a book, so my involvement tends to be reminding her about "lights out" time, and reminder to fill in the reading log.

Not in private school, but my 1st grader has 1 work sheet to complete each night (takes 5 minutes). I do remind him about 3 times before he starts, but he can complete it himself and is proud after he does it.

We also have to read 20 minutes a night and log it in his reading log. We take turns reading, and although he is capable of writing the titles down, I do monitor his handwriting if it gets sloppy.

Private school, 2nd grade. 15 - 20 minutes of homework most nights, plus 20 minutes of reading a book of DC's choice. On Thursday nights, 30 minutes of homework plus reading, because there is an extra "reading activity" that is due on Friday...kind of like a book report but with a different theme each week.

PP here. I usually have to remind DC to start doing homework, and I look it over when it's done and ask him to find and correct any glaring errors...usually spelling or punctuation.

I'm 23:05. The 45 minutes includes reading time.

Until 1st grade, I usually sat with each kid or was nearby, by second/third they were much more independent. Now they are in 3rd and 5th. The 5th grader is completely independent - I don't correct or edit his papers - they are not perfect, but I look at his independence as part of the learning process. He reads on his own - reads 3-6 novels a week (this is all his doing). His teachers encourage using these years to develop independent study habits. I'm amazed when moms in my carpool ask me to check book bags if I pick up and feel a little sorry for the kids.. DS is in strong private (started in 4th). I know from first-hand experience in my own family that oversupervising can really be detrimental in the later grades, so I've made a point not to. My DD is in 3rd. She has about 1/2 hour per night plus reading. She is not an enthusiastic reader, but I let her choose even if it is a picture book below her ability level. She is not as confident as DS, but even so, [b] I feel she will become a reader a little later (she loves to play and draw). I help her a little more (especially with math). She is in public. I do not think it is a reflection of the school - two very different kids.

My son is also in 1st Grade at Beauvoir and is the oppisite of your daughter. During reading, he stops every few minutes to ask me if 15 minutes is up yet.

I ask my son to read to me but I don't help with the math homework except to review it when he has finished. The whole thing takes 30-45 minutes tops.
