Infertility Support and Discussion
| so I received my protocol from Shadey Grove today and they are going to start me on clomid with timed intercourse. I have not gotten my period since going off the pill 10 months ago. I have tried provera etc. I asked about trying Metformin instead of moving right to clomid and was told Clomid was the better option. Does anyone know why one would use clomid vs. metformin or vice versa. I would really appreciate any ideas on this. |

Metformin and Clomid are 2 totally different drugs.
Metformin is used for diabetics but has recently been proven to improve PCOS which would could be a reason for infertility and clomid stimulates the ovaries. Perhaps they believe Clomid will nip it in the bud where as Metformin takes a while to take effect/control of the problem. Metformin worked for me and I got pregnant after being on it for 3 months - Clomid did nothing for me and I always had a regular period. |

PP again - here is a good link to read:
http://www.thelaboroflove.com/articles/what-is-metformin-used-for-in-infertility-treatments/ I dont see why you cant use both at the same time? |
| I am taking both right now. Of course, this is the first cycle with this set of drugs, so I don't have any input quite yet... Hopefully it will be the key, though! |
| I have been on both for my PCOS. My doctor had me stop the metformin though, when a new, large study came out about a year ago that found that women with PCOS did better taking clomid alone and not the combination or just met. I can't seem to find the study online, but ask your doctor about it. This is a pretty big change in the old met/clomid protocol. |
| I was in a very similar situation - didn't get my period for about 18 months after going off the pill, tried provera, etc. My doctor put me on clomid with ovidrel and timed intercourse, and I got pregnant on the very 1st cycle! So, I'm a big believer in clomid - now eight weeks pregnant!! |
| Metformin can cause stomach problems: diarrhea, that kind of stuff...Some women have a really tough time with those side effects of Metformin...My Dr. told me that Clomid was better b/c it does not give you all those stomach problems. I got pregnant while taking Clomid with timed intercourse. I am very happy I took Clomid and would do it again in a heartbeat! |
