Rewatched good old BJD on Christmas and still (still!) can't understand why she chose Mark. He is so boring. On the other hand, I understood why a good steady marriage was never in the cards for me.

And the obvious answer to your first question is that Bridget Jones is a reinterpretation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Even the main male character's name is the EXACT SAME. I mean, seriously, how does this escape someone watching it? Of course she's going to freaking pick Mr. Darcy.
