Best convertible car seat for VW tiguan

The back seat is really small. My girl is 20lbs and tall so I need to transition her out of the infant seat. I just bought a gracco my ride 65 but it is too large and won't fit even with the seats all the way up. Thank you!

Get a Corroco. It will not last past 3 or 3.5 but one of the better smaller seats.

Here's a nice article comparing the size of convertible seats.
http://carseatblog.com/22818/the-ultimate-rear-facing-convertible-space-comparison-review-size-matters/
From what I just learned after reading the article, I'd start with the Maxi Cosi Pria, the Britax Clicktight, Graco Size4me and Chico Nextfit. All of those get an "A" for fit in the car, except the Pria which gets a A+.
The one you tried, Graco My Ride, gets a B-. It's also known for being very reclined, even when you try to get it as upright as possible.

I would suggest going to a store that allows you to take them out to the car to try. Make sure that you read up on how to properly install each one you plan to try, because some either have a recline lever or allow you to manipulate them right at the belt path in a way that allows it to be more upright, creating more space front to back. Depending on the age of your child, it's likely that she'll be able to sit in a more upright position than a newborn would be able to.

Good luck!

Agree with PP. We also have a Tiguan. Love Maxi Cosi, have both the Pria and Mico in our back seat now. Rear facing, the Pria is great. That seat is behind the driver and my husband can have his seat almost completely back. The Pria is large (width wise) and there is no way we'd be able to fit two back there. Researching convertible car seats now and it looks like Britax Clicktights are slim(er). We're planning on going to the store to "test drive" seats.

I'm the PP who posted the link to the size comparison. I've never seen the back of a Tiguan but I have seen the Pria, I agree it's large (but according to the net, it's large in width but front to back it's takes up little room). You're saying two Prias wouldn't fit in the backseat at all, or just side by side? How small could that backseat be?? I used to have the humungous Britax Regent in the back of my small sedan, I could fit another child's seat on the other side just fine (obviously no room for a middle passenger). I'm trying to imagine how small the Tiguan's backseat could possibly be.

OP, try the Clek Fllo (not Foonf as that thing is huge) too. It's $$$ but if you can afford it, it's narrow and gets a B for size.

Most convertible seats are pretty big these days. They're designed to fit kids rear-facing up to 3+ years and then another couple years forward facing.

I loved our Pria's. My six year old is just outgrowing his now. The Corroco is the way to go. Great seat, but does not last long. We had one in our sports car. They have smaller ones, but you aren't going to RF till 4.

Coccoro only RF till 33 lbs. I'm wondering how long it usually lasts kids.

We RF till 2+ (forget when we switched) and used till about 3.5. (We RF in other cars till 4 but it was not possible in this car). They must have changed the spec's as it was 40 pounds when they first came out. Our kid was a lightweight so 33 pounds would have lasted a long time for us.

We have a Tiguan and have our DS is a Diono Radian. He's still rear-facing in it, and we've been using it since he was about 3 months. I've never had trouble with it fitting into the Tiguan (and FWIW, the backseat really isn't very small compared to many cars -- I did a lot of comparison when we bought it). It fits in the rear-facing without having to move either front seat up and behind either seat directly, but you do have to move the seat up a tiny bit (not uncomfortably so, just about one notch from the farthest back).

I didn't get to really use the Maxi Cosi 85 but there wasn't anything that really impressed me about it. I really wanted to like it based off of the review in carseatblog.

Some things that I will say about it is that although it may be tall, it's pretty thin. So for my car, which has barely 34 inches of rear leg room, it cleared the front seat at just the right angle when installed in the middle.

The Chicco Nextfit has a really big shell around it, which causes fit issues. Such as it doesn't give you the extra space in the back that the Maxi Cosi does. One thing to keep in mind about the Nextfit is that it has a bucket seat design. So I'm not sure if that's part of the issue of having to fish out the buckles and straps.

Two other things that the Maxi Cosi offered that I kind of see now is that it has place holders for the straps, which I kind of appreciate more now after dealing with the Chicco. Although I don't remember having that issue with our Britax, but it's been a long time since then. And the Maxi Cosi is more flat on the sides, which they say helps with loading and unloading the baby.

It's been a long time since we used our old Britax Boulevard rear facing but I kind of remember it barely fitting between the driver and passenger seat. When looking at the dimensions of the newer Britax seats I think it might be similar to the Britax Marathon Clicktight. Never tried to see how a newer one would fit in our car now but am kind of curious and would like to try one after trying the Chicco and Maxi Cosi.

Also just doing a quick look, it looks like the Tiguan has 35.8 inches of rear legroom. I think I found someone else mentioning it in another forum, so it's not official or anything. But they said that you'd need about 36 inches of rear legroom to have enough room for a rear facing car seat. So the Tiguan looks like it's not that far off and you might have more options if you install it in the middle seat.

Do you use the angle adjuster pad thing? or just the radian as it comes?

We have a Britax Boulevard rear facing in our ten year old compact car, and have a friend who fit one in her Honda Fit, so I'm confident it would fit in your car.

PP here. To be honest, I don't even know what the angle adjuster pad is. We just use the seat as it came, and it's always worked fine. I suppose it's possible that the seats are a little different shaped now than they were when we bought them. Ours is about 3 years old...
