From what I just learned after reading the article, I'd start with the Maxi Cosi Pria, the Britax Clicktight, Graco Size4me and Chico Nextfit. All of those get an "A" for fit in the car, except the Pria which gets a A+. 
The one you tried, Graco My Ride, gets a B-. It's also known for being very reclined, even when you try to get it as upright as possible.

I would suggest going to a store that allows you to take them out to the car to try. Make sure that you read up on how to properly install each one you plan to try, because some either have a recline lever or allow you to manipulate them right at the belt path in a way that allows it to be more upright, creating more space front to back. Depending on the age of your child, it's likely that she'll be able to sit in a more upright position than a newborn would be able to.

I loved our Pria's.  My six year old is just outgrowing his now.  The Corroco is the way to go.  Great seat, but does not last long.  We had one in our sports car.  They have smaller ones, but you aren't going to RF till 4.[/quote]
