My sister never gets off her phone

Anonymous
It's our first Christmas together with the whole family (parents, brother and wife, sis and husband, us, and assorted kids) in years and all she wanted to do tonight is take staged photos of everyone, post them to FB, and wait for the "likes" and comments. Ugh. Her phone was in her hand all night. I said, "Sis, please put your phone away." She replied that she "needed" to do it. I'm 45 and she's 40. Could this be generational? I just find it highly annoying.

This is how everyone seems to be these days. Sigh.

She's clearly insecure, try to help instead of criticizing.

she has no shame - she's fucking 40. tell her to stop embarrassing herself and the family

It's not generational. I'm 39. When I get together with family, I pay attention directly to them.

I am 41, I am on my phone a lot too. I can do both at the same time - have a conversation and look at FB, twitter, Instagram. I have ADD, I actually focus better and listen more closely when I passively doing something mindless like scroll through a FB feed.

Sure you do.

You can't make someone feel truly heard, listened to, when you're playing on your phone. You're using ADD as an excuse to be rude. If you'd said you knit while having a conversation we'd have all been on your side. I don't talk to people when they do what you do. It's just so freaking rude.

I would bet your sis has hundreds of "mobile uploads" because she is too lazy to go on a PC and organize them herself on Facebook. Take my word for it, you will appreciate the organization later.

Besides, pictures do not have to be in real time. In addition, digital cameras are 100 times better than any mobile phone out there.

Go ahead and tell yourself that. Other people think you are the rudest, most selfish, and childish woman in the room. What you do is so dismissive of others, and makes anyone trying to talk to you feel as if you aren't interested, and they aren't important enough for full attention.

And everyone stop live-broadcasting your lives. Just live them.

+1 it's true. Everyone does think that. It's ok to take some photos, but save the social media for later when you are alone.

I dunno. I don't think phone/internet addiction stems from insecurity.

What does it stem from, then?
