Takoma Park ES STEM Magnet?

Anonymous
What's the scoop with this program? The TPES website just has information for out-of-boundary students who are interested in the STEM Magnet program. How does it work for in-boundary students?

They apply just like the out of boundary students. I think there are certain spots that are reserved for neighborhood kids though...25?

Do you mean TPMS? There is no STEM magnet at TPES.

In-boundary students apply the same way that out of boundary ones do.

I thought all in bounds kids were part of the program

It is to get more white and Asian kids in Takoma Park. I honestly think they need to get rid of all of these programs. The cost to run and bus them is ridiculous. Whatever happened to having kids get pulled for gifted and talented in their own school? Did we trade those teachers for ESOL?

Pull out GT programs aren't that great. It's one of the reasons we left a different district and came to MCPS. If anything, they need to add more magnet programs.

That is until your child doesn't get in a magnet because it isn't based on the smartest, it is based on filling holes of various cultures, races and sex.

And no, we need to stop bussing kids all over the district. There is already enough traffic and wasted emissions.

50% of neighborhood kids are in the magnet at TPES.

No, that's not true. It is not based on race/gender. And my child is not going into MS magnet. I agree, though, we should reduce traffic by creating more magnets so that kids don't have to be bused an hour away.

You can only enter during your child's kindergarten year, and it's HIGHLY competitive for out of neighborhood kids. If you are zoned for TPES, then it seems like plenty of bright and motivated kids are accepted. If you are not zoned for TPES, you need to demonstrate that you don't have a cohort at your home school.

Sorry to say, magnets are no longer the place where you could count on rigorous coursework. IMHO thy have become a sham.
