High School "Recruiting"

Anonymous
The head coach and assistant coach from a local private high school separately gave my husband their cards after watching my eighth grade DS play. You hear about boys getting "recruited" for high school sports, but what does that mean and how does it "work?" An admissions boost? Does it make it more likely our son could get a scholarship of some kind if he has really good grades and test scores? Is it ethical? -- How would we navigate this appropriately? Oh, and our son is very good at his sport, maybe even excellent, but currently we can't even really tell if he has any D1 potential, and he has only been approached by one school.....

The answer to your questions depend on the school. I know in some leagues coaches are not allowed to make first contact but perhaps that varies.
You would best navigate by meeting with the coaches and listening carefully to what they have to say Playing a sport is a hook and there are financial aid monies for those eligible. This is very exciting to have your kid noticed. It could turn into a great opportunity. Still, heed the advice that people give for college recruiting...make sure it is a school that is a good academic fit. And ask questions of them and current parents....how large are rosters, do most kids get to play, what is expected year round? if you can get to a few of the high school games, you'll also get a good feel for yourself for the coaches and players. Take in a school tour and info session.

I don't think there's "sports" scholarship for private HS in this area, but school may have some money set aside for those that they feel will be good for their schools. My DC was offered some significant $ from one school applied, even though we didn't apply for anything aids and was planning on full freight.

But the school didn't tell us about the $ until acceptance was announced (Mar 1st) so unfortunately you just don't know where things stand until you go through the whole application process.

I wonder if that's the rule.

We were approached at DC's club team tryouts. Been in constant contact with the coach. I think DC is qualified for admission without a sports hook, but otherwise from my understanding it will give an admissions and financial boost.

PP here- that is to say, if you really are interested in this school, stay in touch with the coach, let them know of your interest, and have them lead the way in terms of what they can/cannot help with in terms of admissions boost and financial aid.

It is late to apply to many privates. Were they just being polite?

This is so not true. PP, why are you trying to discourage the OP?

Op, there is more than enough time before deadlines (most between Jan 5 and 15) to get in an application. You can always schedule a tour and interview after the New Year, especially if a school is really interested in you and you/your kid are really interested in them.

We just did our tour and interview this week with our kid for two of the 5 schools we are considering. I know several of our kid's friends are just now doing some of their interviews and tours too and we saw other kids and their parents while on our tours.

So does gonzaga now require applicants to list their height and weight and 40 time?

The WCAC deadlines have passed, but the independents go into January.

So, OP ... is it a WCAC school?

A recruiting showcase for a high school? This is the sleaziest thing I have ever seen, and that is really saying something from someone who has been a lacrosse parent for the last 12 years. Embarrassed for Casey. This is disgusting.

Why is this sleazy? His job literally depends on winning, does it not?
