Whole Foods produce cheaper than Safeway/Harris Teeter

. Yesterday I did some comparison shopping at a few grocery stores (I had to go to several to pick up different items for a party). Specifically, I made note of the costs of a variety of fruits and veggies.

Whole Foods was CHEAPER than both Safeway (the one off Sangamore Rd) and Harris Teeter in Adams Morgan.
Cantaloupe, watermelon, bluberries, blackberries, pre-washed salad greens, bananas and broccoli and strawberries ALL cheaper (and organic!)

I had been assuming I could save money by avoiding Whole Foods. Turns out I just need to avoid the expensive pre-made stuff at WHole Foods, as well as some of the fancy organic boxed/canned products (many of which I really dont need in organic form anyway).

I've noticed the same thing. I do most of my shopping at Whole Foods. I do run to the Safeway around the corner occassionally if I'm in a hurry and every time I go there, I think about how the produce at WF is not only cheaper, but better quality. One example that particularly irks me is that it seems the boxed lettuce from Safeway always goes bad within 2 days no matter what the expiration date is.

While things like cheese and meats are more expensive at WF, since things like produce and organic milk are cheaper, I figure it evens out.

I completely agree. DH thinks I am nuts but he never goes! I am so glad I am not the only one!

Completely agree. I have found the same to be true for dry goods such as rice. One kind my kids like is 30 cents cheaper per box at WF.

How does Wegman's compare with the other grocery stores regarding produce prices?

You. Same here. I love the in-season produce especially at WF's. It is better quality and cheaper than at other grocery stores.

Meant to say: "yup"....

Wegmans is generally cheaper than Whole Foods, and has better quality produce a lot of the times.

Agree with pp, Wegmans is tops at best price and, often, best quality.

Agree that in season produce at WF is cheaper at Safeway/HT but Giant and Shoppers or Costco are cheaper than all three.

It depends on the sales week.

For example:
Last week Shoppers had blackberries for .99
This week, Safeway has mangoes for .50 each

So, it depends on what you are buying and the sales week.
