How is the new Principal at Janney?

We live IB and thinking of switching from where we are to our IB school. Now that she has been there a few months are there any changes that you see?

+1. We are, too. I'd also like to hear about any future plans for managing class sizes. The giant 3rd grade class doesn't sound like a good solution to me.

The rumor is that 3, 4, 5 will be large (30+) going forward, except with one teacher in grades 4 and 5 (and 2 in grade 3). There really isn't any other solution. There are too many kids, the city won't redistrict them, the school is out of rooms and they aren't allowed to put trailers outside.

That sounds way too overcrowded. Will parents take their kids out for private school?

FWIW that's the same size as non-Title 1 schools in Mont Co for 1st - 5th, all with one teacher.

AU Park parents really are not as well off as DCUM may make you believe. The vast majority cannot afford private school.

They apply to go to Hearst OOB.

Not always. I'm in MoCo with a child in one of those grades and my kid's class has 19 kids. Some of the others have 17 or 18. Having been in DCPS for a long time, I am thankful for having made the decision to move, because it's clear that the good MCPS schools easily compare to the great DCPS schools. I don't say this to bash, but for a helpful comparison for those wondering. We always wondered.

NP here, I'm always seeing complaints about class sizes in Moco. So its not true?

We're a Janney family and we can't afford private school and neither can anyone we know (I'm thinking of a good 20 families that we're very close to). We simply don't have an extra 30K a year per kid sitting around.
And there are many people at the school who have far less margin than we do.

Janney will just continue to have very large classes in the upper grades unless people move out of the neighborhood.

However, most kids will do FINE in a class of 30+. Most kids don't need a lot of personal interaction with the teacher to do well. My child is in a class of 33 this year at Janney is is fine. It's only the outliers on either end that really need a lot of one-on-one time. We underestimate our kids in this regard.

I've posted this on prior threads on this but what is the true reason for banning trailers? There was no clear explanation beyond that the prior principal didn't like them.

Is cutting back on PK4 an option?

My kid is at Janney and I think 30+ kids a class is not acceptable. I have a friend whose child is in the jumbo 3rd grade class and she does not like it at all.

It really just depends on the school. Many are super crowded, maybe even most. But there are several that are lower enrolled and some that just have more space and tons of classes to spread it out and some that are magnets that are able to protect enrollment a bit. If class size is important to you and you are flexible about where you live, you can find a school with smaller class sizes both close in or far out.

Along with others all over the city...a handful will ever get in at best. With it's existing OOB population, younger siblings of those kids get spots before some OOB kid from the Janney boundary.
