Lottery tips/experiences

Anonymous
Just moved to DC and am in-bounds for Powell in Petworth. Planning to attend EdFest as I know very little about the lottery and the schools that comprise it. Reviewing Powell, it does seem attractive but I want to make sure I am not selling myself (or entering PS3 child) short. Any advice, is there a strategic way to compose your lottery preferences?

Do have commute restrictions but basically anything in Petworth/Columbia Heights/Adams Morgan/Mount Pleasant will work. Looking at profiles the other bi-lingual schools in the area (Bancroft, Bruce Monroe) seem similar to Powell, but are they really? Looking for insight from parents in the same area as me and who have experiences in the area schools. Not opposed to charter schools, and actually would prefer Montessori but there appears to be nothing near me.

None of the schools you mentioned (including yours) admitted any out of bounds PK3 students last year in Round 1. You might be able to get off the waitlist at Bruce Monroe, but you will likely not get an aftercare spot and will need to make other arrangements from 3:15 onward.

Admittedly, I think there is intrinsic value to attending your IB school, but considering your commute restrictions, I don't think there are any DCPS schools you could reasonably get into for PK3 that would be better for you than Powell.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of any charter schools within your commute restrictions that would work better either. You're in a pretty good spot.

You are close to CMI.

I’d suggest started with a more targeted approach over DCUM, which is to contact the Petworth Parents listserv (Yahoo & Google groups) and ask for feedback on Powell and other nearby schools there. Powell is an excellent school and as an in-bounds family, you have an excellent chance of getting in there. A couple of years ago not all in-bounds families got into the PK3 lottery, but last year the school boundary shrank and I believe all in-bounds families got in there. Bancroft—you won’t get in out of bounds. There were in-bounds families who didn’t get in this year. Bruce Monroe—without being in bounds, it will be tough to get in. Charter schools in or within a short commuting distance from Petworth: Creative Minds International, EL Haynes, Yu Ying, Bridges. If you’re in Northern Petworth or your commute takes you north: Cap Cities, SELA, Shining Stars.

You could add DC Bilingual.

Lee Montessori might be feasible, but they are going to have a new location in the next few years so there's that to consider.

That is not true. I personally know someone OOB who got into Powell in round one for PS3 and later turned it down.

Inspired Teaching is the bigger school where Lee resides and its in permanent location. Have close friends at both. Highly recommend.

Once you expand the geography to add these two, which are outside of the boundaries OP gave, you may as well add Yu Ying, LAMB SD campus, Stokes, etc.

They're out of bounds for Bancroft. We have three friends in-bounds for Bancroft who didn't get in for PK3 this year. OP has no shot, it's a wasted spot on their list.

You are actually correct! I was thinking of the year before, when it was full up with in bounds families in PK3.

OP, you'll likely get into Powell. The chances of you getting in anywhere out of bounds anywhere else is very slim unless you're willing to go east of the river.

OP here. Sounds like Inspired and Lee are options, and looking at locations-are somewhat feasible with a car. Any other schools worth a shot?

CMI, if it's not already on your list.

As another poster mentioned, definitely consider CMI and Bridges (although it is moving from its current location next year).
