| Just go to any decent wine shop and tell them what you are having and get a recommendation. What goes with one meal may not go with another. And if you are having something like chili or tacos you are better off with beer. |

Agree that you should go to a wine shop and ask for good bottles to pair with the foods you're most likely to serve.
We host people A LOT. What I do is always keep my favorites on hand, bottles I've enjoyed in the past and that I know pair well with some of the general categories of food I'm likely to serve. I also have a few bottles of generally good stuff on hand, as well as beer, for friends who know what they like even if it doesn't pair. And PP is right that some foods, like spicy SE Asian food, more casual food (BBQ, etc) pairs better with beer. |

Any Sauvignon blanc from Marlborough should be reliable. Lots of good choices in the $10-$15 range. Oyster Bay, Mussel Bay, Nobilo, etc.
Pinot Noir is a pretty safe red. Not as heavy and spicy as a Malbec or a Syrah, but substantial. I like Barboursville Pinot Grigio out of Charlottesville a lot. Lots of good Italian Pinot Grigios out on the market though. |

| World Market sells a Picpoul de Pinet in a green labelled bottle that was the house white at the Inn at Little Washington. It's around $10 and I've found it's universally liked. Leave some bottles for me, though! |

Good to know this is available at World Market. I love this wine. The Silver Spork and previously Marvelous Market at Eastern Market used to sell this, and I miss it. It is such a quaffable wine. |

| cantina zaccagnini montepulciano d'abruzzo--buy it by the case at Costco. An easy to drink, dry Italian red wine that is priced at under $12. It has a distinctive bottle with twine from the grape vine. |
