Don't get why "PG County" is considered disparaging

Anonymous
I've lived in DC near the Prince George's County border for decades and don't get why some in the county consider "PG County" disparaging. I get that from news reports. The people I know who live there don't mind it. It's like calling Los Angeles L.A. to them. Just wondering.

I don't get it either.

Just more "political correctness" BS I guess. Getting so tired of it!

I don't think it is? I mean we say DC, PG etc all the time.

What is PC about this? Just because someone doesn't like something doesn't make their view PC.

OP here. Here's a recent news article saying some consider it a "perjorative."

If some people don't like it, fine, I respect their preferences, I just don't get it, nor does anyone I talk to in real life in Prince George's County.

PC police, please step back in the car.

This is a ridiculous discussion. Don't like how PG county is portrayed, make it better.

I think it's absurd. Saying PG to refer to Prince George's County is not disparaging or pejorative. It's just the name of the place. (Is the name of the shoe, KD8, insulting to Kevin Durant?)

Nice way to say thanks to Nike. Not. All of the comments say the same thing, so at least regular internet posters are sane people.

You're supposed to say "Gorgeous Prince George's," silly.

As a long-time resident of PG County, my experience is that it is based on colloquial usage from years ago. Many years ago (like 20-30 years ago), people used to use PG derogatively. It wasn't uncommon for people to say "That's so PG" when they meant "That's so ghetto", "That's so trashy" or even worse, "That's so black". This was back in the 70's and 80's. In the 90's and early 2000's there was a concerted effort to refer to the County as Prince George's County to try and get away from the PG/trashy references. It's less of any issue now and I don't hear those types of comments anymore, but there was a reason for it.

That's interesting and makes sense. I read the article and was a bit baffled by the county's response given that Prince George's County can be a bit of a mouthful. Think if we had to say District of Columbia all the time.

That's sort of understandable. But the 70s and 80s were a very long time ago, and the area has changed so much since then. If that's why the county officials are fussing and being ungrateful, then they need to take a deep breath and look at the calendar. It's 2015 now.

It's just an abbreviation. Hypersensitivity has spread to such ridiculous levels.

You don't see people freaking out about MOCO!

Makes no sense to me. We use DC, LA, NYC, OBX and no one takes offense. Plus shorthand initials is everywhere now, thanks to the early days of texting. It would be silly to use KD8 and then spell out PG.

I wasn't aware it was considered disparaging. Not sure why this is a PC thing either. Everything is shorten to acronyms nowadays.
