Hey! Visitors and Hosts! There are these things called HOTELS.

Anonymous
Seriously people. Don't invite guests to stay in your home if you know they are going to drive you nuts. If they have kids and you don't, or you do and they don't, or they stay up late and you go to bed early, or whatever all these holiday complaints are. Just give them a list of nearby hotels.

And visitors! If you are staying in someone's house, realize that THEY live there, you do not. If there are other guests that are likely to drive you nuts, get a hotel near by! It makes the holiday so much more pleasant. If you have a completely different life style that is likely to be a major rub on the hosts, have your gift to them be your offer to stay in a hotel. Everyone gets time to sleep.

If your house didn't have empty rooms, your guests wouldn't be clamoring to stay there.

Hotels is expensive. Most people are trying to shack up to economize, not because they love your company.

If you know you're going to stay somewhere other than home for the holidays you can start looking for deals early on. Tons of great discounted hotels where people can stay esp in the metropolitan area. If OP lived in Bumfuckistan and the nearest hotel was more than 20 minutes away then sure I can understand housing guests, but presumably anywhere more than 20 mins away from hotels also means your house is big enough to host. Catch 22.

Ugh but what do you do when your hosts are "offended" that you don't want to stay with them, then get all annoyed when you do? My MIL was one of those people that threw a hissy fit when we wanted to stay at a hotel instead of their home, but then when we stayed with them tried to insist that we handle things like our kids bedtime, naps, etc. on HER terms. You can't have it both ways. If your out of town visitors WANT to stay in a hotel, there may be a reason!

Yep! My ILs are the same. They crowd people into their tiny house and I'm the horrible DIL who dares to volunteer to stay in a hotel...

That's one reason we bought a tiny house in DC. Instant excuse to decline sleepovers.

I'd love to say no overnight guests. My ILs invite themselves and the one time we already had guests so no spare room and they had to stay in a hotel they complained bitterly about every aspect of the experience. Shock of all shocks, they also complain bitterly about every aspect of staying with us. They are miserable guests no matter where they stay.

Then say no. So what if they complain? They are going to, anyway. Let them grumble.

Agreed. So tired of reading all these vents and complaints. Makes me realize what a selfish, insular society we've become. After reading threads in here I am convinced that gracious, kind hosts no longer exist. Everyone is just faking it and resents any change to their carefully cultivated lives. Sad.

Hotels have their issues too. Annoying guests, for starters.

That made my night

Tiny house + living in Bumfuckistan and having the nearest hotel 20 minutes away is the best. Guests don't want to be out on the roads late a night ("Oh, mom, you'll want to get going soon...don't want to hit a moose!"), and they're liable to dilly dally at the hotel in the morning. Plus I told them if they came before 8am, they'd have to help with morning chores. Sometimes, I really miss those days.

You act like an adult and say thanks but we are staying at the Ritz or wherever.

My inlaws don't have an extra couple hundred dollars for a hotel room.
Refuses to take money for one.
I am one resourceful b^%* apparently and devised a scheme where we had "hotel points" that would expire if we didn't use them by (insert date one week after inlaws planned visit) so they would be doing us a big favor by using the points since we hate to lose money/aka points.
The first time I actually called the front desk and explained my pain to the very understanding woman who also had miserable inlaws and promised to back my story to the bitter end, if needed.
They have never caught on and it's been years that we have been doing this.
