Is a Hoover Board too much of a gift for a 12 year old?

My sister and I were discussing Christmas gifts for the kids. Her 12 year old daughter wants a Hoover Board, but I think that's a little too excessive for a 12 year old (whether male or female. Thoughts?

I agree, but I don't see why my opinion should have any weight with your sister!

How can we judge what would be considered excessive for your sister and her family? If that's the type of gifts that they typically give, then sure, why not. My 10 year old wants one. I was in the mall this past weekend and decided to check them out. $500? Nope, that's way more than we would ever spend on a holiday gift. For my family it's excessive but I have no problem with anyone else who would purchase this for their child. Good for them, seems to be one of the "hot" items this year.

Why would you ask someone else if a gift is excessive? Get whatever you want for your kids. A kid usually doesn't have $500 to spend so they might as well get it for Christmas.

OP, why are you concerned about what's excessive for your sister's kids?

OP, what are you planning to do with the information that you get from DCUM? My guess is that if the polls trend towards "excessive" then you will tell her. If not, you will just let it go. Mind your own business and worry about what to get your own kids.

I'd do it if my kids were into it. Then again, I just bought the 300 piece Magformers set, so it's clear I'm ridiculous.

My budget is about $500 for my 5 year old so at 12, yes, I'd buy it.

Not PP you quoted, but people have different incomes and different budgets, I'm not sure why that's so shocking. And I'm the pp who said my son wants one but it's not in our budget.

Depends. Some families think an ipad is a reasonable present, some people think it's excessive.

We're spending a small fortune on an instrument for one of our children. Is it excessive? Maybe. Can we afford it? Yes. Will it be appreciated and used? Absolutely.
