Every time. I'm wondering how to approach the subject with the teacher as I think she's done it this way for a long time. She is not receptive to any idea that is not her own.
I don't think kids should see corrections meant for other students. The point of the teacher's method is the students can see what other students did well and poorly and use that to improve. In addition to that not being okay with me, it's obvious that there are two favorites. They always receive 'excellent,' 'best in class,' etc. These two students never receive any constructive criticism, yet the rest of the class is called out every single week. All answers and comments are visible on the class blog so it's easy for me to see that while these two students have good answers, they also have incomplete sentences, run-on sentences, etc. My daughter is well-behaved and a good student, and while I value striving for excellence, this 'group viewing' is taking a toll on her confidence. The other day, her friend said, 'Why do you always get negative comments?' She came home me very upset. I am trying not to make the rest of the year miserable with this teacher, but this is the third time I've had a problem...from teaching a concept incorrectly to 'identifying deficiencies' that were later proven not to exist. I've been polite and respectful, but I've had it! |
| Kids need to learn that (a) life isn't always fair and (b) they're not going to excel at everything they attempt. This is a valuable lesson for your DD. She'll be fine. |
| It's not about fair. It's about sharing student info that is no one else's business. Are you okay with your child's entire class along with their parents knowing your kids every grade? |
| It might just be a time saver for the teacher. You're assuming that you know this teacher's motivation for doing this but that might not be accurate. If she is truly using shaming to be a teaching tool, then I would talk with her and tell her how you feel. |
Is this an ELA class? If not, the teacher may not be allowed to grade for incomplete or run on sentences. Even in ELA classes, the choice of which 6 traits of writing to critique can shape how much grammar and sentence structure count for particular assignments. What does the rubric say? |
| Meh. I grew up in q different country and the teacher gave out papers and announced everyone grades oitloi for and any egregious corrections to the whole class. We survived. It's not pleasant to be shamed but sometimes it and peer pressure works. They still teach this way in France and they used to teach like that here too a long time ago. I bunk it's useful to see all the mistakes one can make and learn to do better from that. As long as it's not personal and just about the work. Playing favorites I annoying but will always happen. Life is not fair. Kids may as well see it early. |
| Question about this blog: how does student wor end up there? Are students submitting work electronically to say Google classroom? If the teacher is scanning it in or otherwise uploading herself, she can easily remove student names or ID numbers, but keep comments. In the days before Google classroom, I did this. The students still generally knew whose work it was (they have been in school together for years, know each each other's handwriting and writing styles, catchphrases, etc.) so the potential for shame never fully disappeared. I used to compile common errors, then writing the "C", "D", and "E" anchor papers to spare student feelings. BTW, my dept head warned me extra work like this would eventually lead to teacher burnout and he was right so I don't recommend your DD's teacher do this. |
| I'm fine with it. I don't see the issue. |
| OP is helicoptering. myob! |
| Oh, OP. You are paying reeealllly close attention to this. Really, really close attention. Isn't there something else you can do with your time? Your kid is fine. |
|
It can easily go from a useful tool to teacher-led bullying if the same students are always singled out to be the bad example or the good example. It has to be even-handed to avoid that pitfall.

| How old is your daughter? |
| How old are the kids? I don't understand what is being done. Are they hanging up their work? Reviewing it in front of everyone and saying "Eliza did this wrong"? |
That is how they taught at my school in the 70-80s (midwest) Everyone survived |
Yes, but you probably had lots of snow, and we have lots of snowflakes. |
