Unexcused absences

| My kids never miss school but they will be missing Wed morning for travel. Do you guys lie and call them in sick or take the unexcused absence. I don't really care about the half day unexcused absence but my son is worried about not being able to make up a quiz (he's in high school and was told the teachers don't have to let you make up work for unexcused absence). |

| The teachers do not have to let him make it up. I wouldn't set the example to my kid that you lie and say you're sick when you're not. I'd just take the unexcused absence. I'm surprised a teacher is giving a quiz on Wednesday, as many kids will be absent for travel. |

In high school - I'd lie and called in sick. It's not your kid fault your family decided to travel on Wed, why should he suffer?
And yes, teachers will not allow retakes for unexcused absents. |

That's exactly why I would give a quiz that day - so probably good that I am not a teacher. Even just a few points to to recognize the ones who follow the school calendar. |

| I was waiting for the first mean response. His 10th year of school and the first time we're leaving a half day early to save a thousand dollars on flights to see a grandmother that we're not sure how many more holidays we'll have with her. Happy holidays to you! |

I know the policy is that teachers don't have to let kids make up assignments for unexcused absences, but in reality, we've never had a teacher refuse a makeup.
(One child has graduated from MCPS and one is a junior. We obviously don't make a habit of unexcused absences, but they do happen on occasion, especially with holiday travel.) |

| Why can't your son just say to his teacher "Hi Ms. Hardass, my family is making me miss school Wednesday to go see my grandmother for Thanksgiving, and they say we have to leave that morning because the flights are too expensive otherwise. I am sorry to miss the quiz. Would you please allow me to make it up at a time that seems fair to you? I can also take it Tuesday after school." |

In my children's school you need to take the exams before you leave on an unexcused absence. That seems to work well. |

Why assume the teacher is a hardass just because he or she is giving a quiz as opposed to having a freebie period the day before Thanksgiving break? Is the day after break better so they have to study rather than relax for a full four days? |

Any teacher giving a quiz Wednesday is acting in a punitively. No way I'd give a quiz that day!
My HS students will have an activity Wednesday that takes about 20 minutes to complete. Students who miss school Wednesday can also do the activity as it will be posted in Google Classroom. I wish teachers would stop punishing students for problems students didn't create. Kinda like how we should enact the Federal Dream Act... |

Now teachers are punishing students by giving a quiz on a scheduled school day. What a great message to send teens! |
