ECNL moving to school year not calendar

Let's see if ECNL can address trap players for college recruiting earlier than 26/27. I hope they can do it on 25/26.

Actually, those 10% moving "down" are more of boon for the younger players to help them develop and improve. In a way, those 10% clawed, scratched and survived all these years to only get relegated to less competition. Sure they got screwed by the trap year BUT now there getting screwed by their own elite leagues who for their own selfish reasons want them on younger teams now. But hey, they'll score some goals!

Man! Is common sense really that uncommon?? C'mon, work those mental muscles.....I know you can get there if you try hard enough. You only think they are going to be playing down because of the BY lie you've been living. In the real world there is no actual advantage to being born in Q1. We artificially made it a special quarter to be born. It correlates to nothing until you get up to international competition. In every normal sense the advantage should go to September babies. There is no 'playing down', you're now going to get a front row seat to what the other kids in 6th grade are capable of. It has nothing to do with scoring goals. You're going to compete for high school roster spots with other 9th graders. You're going to compete for scholarships with other 11th graders. When you're in 11th grade, are you competing for scholarships with 10th graders?? When you try out for the 9th grade team are you competing against 8th graders?? So it what universe does it make sense to keep playing down. Your kid is playing down now and its a lie.

See you in the fall. lol.

And now we “artificially make it Q3.” The mental gymnastics these SY parents make is nothing short of shocking. Your kid won’t be better tomorrow morning…it’s all and only about doing the work.

September parents and January parents are the same. No different.

Maybe ... But one thing is for sure ... Sept parents are about to join January parents in the stands and the trash talk is going to be EPIC!

I see the wheels turning....you can do it, you're almost there! I know the shock of it all is still settling in but I have faith you'll get there. It's not artificially anything. Who will kids compete against in high school? Who will they compete with for scholarships......aaaaaand who should they compete with to begin with. C'mon...you can do it.

Funny, that wasn't me.

Let the fun begin! Those parents have always sat together but the role reversal makes for an awesome social experiment. There's an interesting dynamic and hierarchy on competitive teams. Flipping that hierarchy on its head is a bit cruel and unusual.

Our director is talking about forming SY teams and having them play up since 25/26 is now a wash. So the 2012 age group is now Aug 1 2012 to July 31 2013. 2013 is now Aug 1 2013 to July 31 2014

Keep up, Q3 and Q4 are relatively better based on the change in age cutoffs.

Our ecnl club just sent out an email that says no changes at all to 25/26. Unknown for 26/27.

So unrealistic. What a disadvantage to already strong clubs with strong teams to go down in ranking as they play up. But nice, (almost) creative thought ..

Seems like quite a few of these have gone out today, following the recommendation for no change next year. So year 26/27 it is then .. which is still all good as change will still happen.

I’m sure ECNL podcast will address rumors of what they will do. They need to get the ratings up and stop talking about “reds not your color”
we get it referees suck but it’s not our job to hold them accountable. It’s better to just let terrible human beings continue to be awful during the games we are paying for.

I can see both sides if the change is inevitable for Fall 26 why not start fall 25 if your league is able to. If registration software isn’t available can always go the MLSN biobanding route but with more specific rules to SY age groups. Which would not go against the mandate either.

But it’s definitely easier for all clubs to keep things the same and just wait one more year.

The change is only going to really help trapped players who are already good players to begin with and especially if you have your child playing 1 year or in some cases 2 years up.

However, players who are trapped and struggling….this will not make much of a difference. Talent is talent and sure they might compete better dropping down but they are still going to look average to scouts. Don’t expect any miracles.

I’m so happy for all the Fall kids who can now be with their grade in 2026!

Where do Q3 kids who started school early go under the new approach? For example, October 2013 birthday currently playing U12 and already in 6th grade? The above cutoffs would move them down a soccer year, but that would have them playing with kids a grade below them. Maybe an advantage playing against younger kids, but they’re already used to playing with older kids and moving down would mess up their recruiting cycle.

Even with the no change in 2025 it sure feels like a wash of a year if leagues plan to change to SY in 2026. Feels cowardly that US Soccer just said leagues can figure it out on their own
