| I'm guessing social anxiety can be displayed in a variety of ways, but if you're familiar with it in 8/9 boys, what types of behaviors do you see? My son has GAD, and he struggles with socialization in groups (school, teams, church). Sometimes he's less engaged, quiet, and on the periphery of groups. When he is at his most uncomfortable, he becomes super silly. What does social anxiety look like? |
| It looks like silliness or withdrawal. Anything to avoid the uncomfortable feeling of anxiety. Also temper tantrums. Do lots of role playing and anticipating what the anxiety is like internally (Probably everyone here thinks I have on weird clothes) and how to talk back to it (My parents know what boys my age usually wear. Nobody cares what I am wearing). |
| Is there a medication that can help with this? |
Thank you. |
| My boy will get angry easily and lash out, usually at a sibling before arriving at activity. Or he'll freak out about his clothes or something minor and start to cry and not want to go. When he is in a group of friends he will sometimes be really silly or obnoxious and annoying, I think he is trying to fit in. he is very sensitive about minor perceived slights from peers. Luckily he still seems to have friends. He is taking meds for anxiety which helps and we do therapy. |

Talking too much -- dominating conversation
Talking too little Or patterns of both with little balance in between Sensitivity about perceived slights or projecting future slights "I know so and so will make fun of me tomorrow" or "I can tell Larlo is going to be mad at me about this." Super silliness, almost giddiness when the pressure is off. Trouble sleeping |
